Thank you everyone for your replies. I thought thrush too, but I wasn't sure since there's no typical white patches. It's like a red stripe down the center of the tongue, but only halfway, not to the tip. And it's very smooth in the red stripe. Other than that his mouth looks healthy as can be, and he doesn't seem to be having any discomfort when eating.

Daily probiotics and some dietary changes can help. I think Risa mentioned a great mouth wash at some point, maybe others can share the brand name.
You may have to work at getting his body to be more alkaline (yeast love acid environments and feed off sugars). Baking soda baths may help as well. 1/2 cup in a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes or more.

I too get red smooth patches on my tongue and very little, if any, white coating or bumps when i get oral thrush........pretty sure this is what it will be, but surprised to hear the doctors haven't mentioned it??? I'm using Nystatin too for what i suspect is thrush in my throat and this morning after only 1 1/2 days of treatment, my throat seems nearly back to normal.
