reoccurring sinus infection??

I was wondering what to do? My 22 mo old w cf has had a sinus infection for a month now!! She has been on Augmentin 600 for 23 days!! She was off for 2 days and then BAM another green goop. She has not coughed with this one but at the beginning of the month her cough was pretty bad. The clinic doesn't want to do another round of antibiotics but i took her to her pedi (for pink eye!!) today and she gave us ANOTHER round of antibiotics because this sinus infection has lasted for a week and a half.
I feel like i should give it to her to hopefully knock it out or do i wait to see if it will go away - how long to wait? Or do i need another type antibiotic??? Will it hurt her to be on another dose? making it 33 days!! Has anyone delt with this type of infection that won't go away???

Also, i wondered what the signs were for sinus polyps?? I have never mentioned this to the cf clinic b/c this is her first real bad sinus infection??

DS had one last January along with an ear infection and was on augmentin for the ears for 10 days. All thru winter he had a nasty stuffy noise and we're try rinsing his nose with saline -- we recently found an aerosol called Simply Saline that works much better than the squeeze bottle and also in 3% solution over the counter. Anyway, when he had his CF Clinic appointment in April his doctor got after us for his boogery nose -- put him on a stronger dose of augmentin for 30 days and we were told if it didn't clear up to call him back and he'd prescribe something else. In our case the augmentin worked and he hasn't had a problem since.

Could be that your doctor needs to do a culture and determine what antibiotic would work best. Also, I'd ask about the saline spray up the nose -- cleans out the gunk and reduces swelling. Liza

Also, I'd call your cf doctor -- ours was concerned because that gunk could cause and upper respiratory infection and get into their lungs. Liza

I've got a great massage that really helps drain the sinuses that I'd be happy to email if you want (email me at akaeg@metzero.net).

In addition to that, make sure that you're giving him probiotics like acidophilus and HSO so that you keep his gut flora balanced during the antibiotics. You can also put him in a very warm bath in a steamy room to help drain. His nose will run, you can wipe it or use a suction bulb to help coax more out.

Think about a humidifier or vaporizer (vaporizers are easier to clean). In addition to regular water, put some Tea Tree Oil (TTO - 20 drops or so) in there. This will help kill any bacteria growing in the water or the tank as well as help kill the germs in his sinuses as he breathes. You can sit by the vaporizer and tickle him so that he breathes deeply or just put it right by his bed so that he inhales it all night. This will help the stuff to be more moist and thus drain better as well as to get the TTO in.

You can do a saline aerosol in a nebulizer with a mask, so that he breathes it in through his nose.

Also, if you aren't breastfeeding, make sure that his nutrition is really good so that his body has the resources to help fight the infection. Reliv is an AWESOME multivitamin that you can put in a sippy cup. My daughter begs for hers and it has made a HUGE difference in my health.
