Well today I got my first picc. It was not at all what I expected. It was worse. I wish they would have put me to sleep to do it. Is blood leaking out around the insertion site normal? It's not a lot of blood, but tiny bits seep out while i'm infusing meds.

I also had an allergic reaction to Vancromycin sp? I started it up and about 15 minutes into it, I started itching like crazy and my body got really hot and I turned blood red. It was scary, so we immediately unhooked it and called the doctor. She said to stop taking it and to take Benadryl which knocked me out and put me on bactrium.

I had a picc that for the longest time leaked like crazy. Because they sliced right into the vein. Genius. It isnt normal per se, but unless it is a lot, or increasing in amount, dont worry too much. All this nonsense is why I finally got a port like a month ago.

What you had was Red Man's Syndrome. It is very common from Vanco. It is my understanding that it is not classified as an allergic reaction but rather a side effect. If you infuse it slowly it probably won't happen. That's great your MRSA is sensitive to Bactrim..enjoy it while that lasts.

Oh Yes! Red Man's Syndrome! I experienced this too. The itchy scalp and body-ugh! I felt like a mental patient scratching my head every few seconds!

What I do is take Benedryl an hour before infusing & infuse the vanco on the slowest speed possible. That took care of it. As a matter of fact, by the 2nd week of it, I didn't even need Benedryl anymore. Maybe because I infused it slower than they did at the hospital? Maybe my body got used to it? Hard to tell.

Yes, some seepage the first 24 hours is normal. If it's much more than that, I would have the doctor look at it. Do you not have home-health nurses that could come by & take a look at it (assuming you're doing home IVs)?

I hope you get to feeling better!
