For those who remember president Ronald Reagan, chest PT was treatment of choice once the bullets were removed.

My mom did manual CPT for 15 years and NEVER had a problem with carpel tunnel. She got pretty buff, but never injured. And she's damn good at it, let me tell ya! What a load of BS!!!!!! Even my doctor dislikes the vest and pretty much refuses it for his patients (for hospital stays). You're there to get beat and well!

I was just in the hospital this past week, and my first night there I requested manual CPT from the RT. He did so, but also gave me the line of cr*p about carpal tunnel. Guess he was trying to make me feel guilty for asking.

So basically the RT's job is to take the neb, pour the med into it and hand it to you. Then, he plops down in a chair and watches tv till you're done. My 5 year old nephew can do that. I asked another RT to clean the neb because it hadn't been cleaned for 2 days. He said "Oh they don't need to be cleaned that often... everything's sterile." Seriously???

Needless to say, I was irritated with this whole routine and plan to do some loud complaining. Something in the RT program needs to change across the board when it comes to CF.

One more thing; you need to assert yourself!
Only you can know what you feel like.
If the vest doesn't work & you feel that manual CPT does than by all means, be assertive!
Just becaue the people working in the hospital have a bunch of letters after their name(s) that doesn't mean they are always right.
You are the patient, you are the CUSTOMER! The customer is always right...
Best of luck to you. 'Pat'.

I have had this happen to me once, and it was taken care of VERY quickly. I say have your doc write an order for manual CPT with each neb treatment and they have to give that to you.

I was the same as you pre transplant I preferred manual CPT as I felt it was more effective. I would request hospital stays so I could get manual CPT because when I was at home I had no real option besides the vest. My last hospital stay before my transplant I had an RT come in and administer a treatment and he left. When he came back and turned off the treatment and went to leave I said excuse me can I get CPT. His response was there is no order for that, we don't do that. I immediately copped an attitude and told him he was lying.

My response was something like - There is an order and why else do you think I am here. I can do all this other ***** by myself at home. Obviously you don't understand the complexities of CF and understand that CPT is vital in proper care for my disease.

He just stared at me and repeated that there was no order and he would not perform it. Then he left .. as I became more angry. I then called the nurses station and demanded someone in my room at that moment. My nurse came in and I told her I wanted to speak to the most in charge person I could because I was livid. I then began ranting about how it was completely useless and an absolute waste of my time and insurance to be in the hospital without CPT. Then continued with something like what kind of CF Center were they running when the RTs were refusing CPT saying it was necessary?

I ended up getting the head of the RT department in my room and while she performed my CPT she had the crap RT look through every paper in my chart and find every order for CPT. Then she made him come in and apologize to me. After that I just looked at her and at him and told him I didn't want to deal with him again and maybe he should go back to school so he can better understand his job and the patients who benefit from what he is supposed to do.

After that the order was stapled to the top of my chart and I received CPT every treatment. Carpal Tunnel my ass - my response would be really I wish carpal tunnel was my BIGGEST concern. People go to school for a job and get paid to do a job - they need to do it. Have the doc order it and harass the staff until you get what you want. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Good luck and I am sorry you had to go through this too. I completely understand how frustrating that is. The only word of advice I can offer is to get angry about it. Don't just let them leave with no recourse and don't let them get away with NOT doing what they need to do. Cause a scene and I can guarantee they will try their best to keep you happy so you will shut up.

Lindsey
