Running and lifting weights with a port

The only person I've ever known to have a port flip was a child. He didn't do anything it just flipped 2 months after placement and they could never fix it. It wasn't exercise that caused it though.

Honestly, our son has had his port for nearly a year and he's exceptionally active. We've never placed restrictions on him based upon the port.

I had my first port for 10 years and it never flipped or wiggled away from its original location. I got a new port placed about 14 months ago, and in that time I've been lifting weights and working out more than I ever used to. I haven't had any problems.

Since the port is new, I would recommend that you build up your muscles gradually. When I first got mine it was difficult for me to play my F. horn without feeling like I was going to "pop" something or break the stitches. Just build up a tolerance slowly. Wait to do bench presses until you've had a chance to work on your pecks and upper back.

Having a port is so much better than a PICC, especially when it comes to exercise. You'll find that you don't have to "baby" the port nearly as much as the PICC. Always warm up and don't lift more than you're able. Go slowly and you'll be able to enjoy not only a great experience with the port, but better overall lung function as you strengthen the muscles of your chest walls and back.
