Running out of effective oral ABXs (Resistance)

I have cultured MRSA for probably 10 years now (since my first sinus surgery) and it was very sensitive for years to Cipro and Tetracycline. I was on Tetra every day for about 2 years. Now it's resistant. I've heard of Doxycycline but I don't know if this will have cross-resistance or not. I have been on all the conventional ones and the only things that help even a little are Bactrim, Ketek, and Zyvox.

Anyway, I'm having a flare up (tight chest, SOB, lots of coughing, low grade fever) so I'm going to the doctor tomorrow. I just got off of IV Vanc 2 weeks ago so wanted to try something oral first.

Really, I just wanted to ask you guys if you have had any luck with any certain combinations or maybe something that isn't prescribed as often as other standard ones. I really like Zyvox but my insurance won't cover it, and I can't afford the 3 weeks I stay on it.

Just wanted something to maybe suggest tomorrow because if not I'm usually put on combo of Bactrim & Ketek which isn't helping much anymore.

Thanks!

Nick, I can certainly relate. I've had MRSA in every sputum culture for 8 years after my lung surgery. It has definitely been my nemisis and cause of the majority of my problems. Hmmm, seems we both picked up the darn cootie after surgery.

I too have tried every thing including Vanco, that ruined my kidneys. I finally talked my doc into trying Zyvox for the first time this past Dec and Jan. I was on IVs for 3 weeks followed by 3 months of Bactrim everyday.

Guess what? It worked! The last 2 cultures have come up clear! I'm so happy but yet tentative in my happiness, knowing the booger could come back so easily.

But for now I'm rejoicing and am feeling much better.

Good luck to you, hope you find a ABX combo that blasts that beast.

The Vanc has also ruined my kidneys. They're at about 40% right now. Was only able to tolerate it twice a day instead of the usual 4 times.

Glad that those worked for you! I have had Zyvox many times in the past and even it only got rid of it temporarily. I may ask to try a couple months of Bactrim anyway and see how it goes. Usually I'm only on it for 2 weeks.

I have had the same problem lately. Bactrim doesnt do anything anymore, and Zyvox I feel like I am on all the time...ick. I tried "minocycline" if you would want to suggest that to your doctor. I had bad side effects so I had to stop, I dont knnow if it would be good for you though.

Hope you feel better soon!
