That's "Starbucks Anonymous" to the coffee-virgins out there <sips caramel macchiatto while dribbling a bit on the keyboard>

OK, so everyone always says that if you drink a latte from starbucks everyday, you WILL gain tons of weight (they use whole milk AND I take lotsa insulin for them), so my question is, why have I been LOSING weight since doing the daily latte thing? Is it related to that, or is it probably because I've been lifting weights every other day and my metabolism is just getting better? I'm hoping its not cause of starbucks, cause honsestly, I know I've got a problem, and I don't see myself giving it up without a fight.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think I'm addicted to the caramel machiattos from starbucks and its starting to cost a lot of money. I've been known to scrounge up all the spare change I could find (even checking the couch cousions) to get my daily fix. Its costing about $25 weekly to continue this habit, but I honsestly NEED it! I have tried to make my own coffee at home, and its NOT the same. I've also skipped a day here and there, and just feel unmotivated and crummy and the whole day I feel like something is missing. Urgh.... I know its a stupid addiction, but I just feel lousy without it.

So, what can I do? Do you find any harm in this? Is there a way to enjoy daily living without starbucks? urghhh......

Hi Sonia,

I AM AN STARBUCKS ADICT TOO. I love "frapuchinos" with cofee and caramel. I take the bib size. Fortunately i live in the outsides of madrid and starbucks use to be in the city.......anyway, everytime I see one of them i can´t avoid coming in and taking the biggest frapuchino.
You know, I drink almost half a liter of cofee and after, I look like a motorbike about the cofee.

Good luck and enjoy them.......

Kisses

caffene is a dieretic (sp?) so you probably aren't absorbing the things like you should. that would be my guess.

Ben-

So does that mean that when I drink diet soda with caffeine along with my meals, I'm not absorbing that? Interesting.

I just think its weird that anyone without CF has to steer clear of these things for their "diet" cause they'd gain wieght just looking at 'em, but for me, not so much.

Hi, my name is Sherri and I'm also a caramel machiatto addict

However, I don't have cf, have to drink the non-fat version and still gain weight from it.

Too bad I can't get my 3 year old cfer to drink it. She is however getting a taste for the Strawberry Creme Frappucino. Expensive drink for a little one, but if it helps put on the weight, I'll do it.

As ben said caffeine is a diuretic, weak though.

With cystics prob. not the best thing to be drinking. *drinks coke*
As for gaining lbs with starbucks go for the White Chocolate Frappuccino blended crème with whipped creme. That has a whopping 610 calories for a grande (the middle size one).

in the rare instance i find myself in a starbucks i have found myself refusing to order using their drink sizing, it's so ridiculous--tall, grande, whatever. it's small, medium, large for me, dammit!

not only is it a diuretic, but also an appetite suppressant. yikes! that's why i always drink that latte w/ an extra vitamin pill & a big fat danish. :) (addicts will do anything to justify their habit....)

I was going to say caffine is a diuretic and an appetite suppressant but Ben and anon. beat me to it. I too love my coffee, although I'm staying away from it right now because of those factors.

Do you like the frappucinos? The flavored ones like strawberries and cream (they can also get creative and make you a flavor if they carry it). One of those suckers, a short has about 450 calories in it and NOOOOO caffine side affects.

Also Icecream Icecream Icecream. I've compared some brands in my quest to gain weight and I personally have found that ben and Jerry's has the most calories and protein per serving size. I have 1 scoop in the AM and 2-3 in the afternoon.

i agree w/ julie about the ice cream. ice cream & beef have been the best items for me when it comes to gaining weight. but the bigger picture is to count calories! i personally need to consume 3000 calories a day in order to gain weight. this is a lot of work, but i think when you have a number like that, then you know when you need to push yourself a little & eat that extra peanut butter cracker or drink one more ensure.

This is for the grande caramel machiatto.... Still pretty high in fat and calories, no?

So, is this caffeine thing just make us CFers loose weight then? Still doesn't make sense why non-CFers gain so much weight drinking lattes and caffeine-included drinks, while I can't seem to. Also, I drink caffeinated diet soda throughout the day, and always have, and haven't had this problem until my Starbucks fetish kicked in about 3 months ago (when we moved right next door to one!!!)

Thanks for all the great responses. Good to know I'm not alone. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

p.s.- Julie, you are one heck of a researcher! Thanks for the info. on ice cream. I can't eat the chunky types of ice cream cause my teeth are really sensitive to cold stuff that is hard and crunchy (sorry, long story and probably TMI)...

Anyway, here's the nutritional on the caramel machiatto:

I'm the same way with icecream, always had sensitive teeth! I've been able to handle it during the pregnancy though, strangely enough! Before that, I use to make myself Milk shakes at home with the least chunk icecream I could find. Sometimes just plain flavors but Ben and Jerry's doesn't make just plain.

As far as non-CFers gaining weight from lattes... not entirely sure that's related to just the lattes. I'm sure the rest of their diet is lacking in necessary places and excessive in areas where it needn't be (is that a word?).

Oh... and this one is Mark's ''baby", not mine at all. I just learned what I repeat here (about nutrition) from him as I am lovingly subjected to it every hour of the day. His dad owns a health food and supplement store, opened it when he was about 11-12ish and Mark started working there when he was 14. He knows a crapload. Starts going off on rants sometimes and I can't make up or down of what he is saying. He loves to talk about nutrition and weight gain, body building, sports and nutrition supplements... I could go on and on <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi, my name is Fred, and I'm a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato addict...I've been able to go a month without one, but that's cause I've had to pinch pennies to keep my pretzel fix. I've been becoming a connosuer of fine coffees, and so far, Kona Coffee beats all others. I really love the froth to the Starbucks coffees, so even if I stay away from the caramel (I easily seem to gain weight) macchiatto, I still go for a tall Capuchino (Cup of Chino?)
I haven't memorized the prices, but I think a tall can run near 400 yen (about $5.00) here, and think it's more expensive than the states.
It took me a few years before I discovered Starbucks, but next to the "Seattle Coffee" shop, it's one of my favorites.
Yes, I've heard coffee is a diuretic, and will pull your sugar level down quick if you don't eat something with it. But, more so, drinking too much is also a cause of getting pimples on the face and back. A caution to those who have such symptoms. Not sure why it happens, but it was discovered on some program here in Japan. Also, if too much coffee is drunk without something else in the stomach, it's hard on the stomach, so that is another thing to be cautious about.

Seems like we should all have stock in Starbucks! I love my hazelnut lattes. Since I don't have cf I do order mine "no-fat". My daughter loves the vanilla bean frappuccinos.

Julie, You're probably gonna need a caffeine feed, after changing the diapers!! Mark may even throw out his anti-caffeine moral, to keep him awake! (pun intended!)
It's good you're not on the train right now, I'm sure it was tough to "detox" from caffeine!
Anyway, all this talk about SA, and I'm gonna have to close-in on the closest one to get a FRAPPE!!! *Pulls hair and screams*
But, I avoid Japanese coffee shops, and usually prefer 'Dotour', 'McDonalds', or even 'Mr. Donuts' shops if I can't get a 'Starbucks' fix (Or can't afford it!). Oh, in Japan, 'Mr. Donuts' is the only place that offers free refills, and on occasion 'McDonalds' gives free refills, but that depends on the region-I was refused one time when I went to Kyoto and ordered coffee with my happy meal (kidding). I can't drink the colas from the fountains, most are too acidic, and burn my stomach, so I find coffee tastes better with a Big Mac!

Geez, I feel like I am missing out on something great (and expensive). I have never gotten coffee from Starbucks. The closest Starbucks to me is about 45 mins away. I have tried the frappucinos that Starbucks put out in the grocery stores that you put in the fridge. I like the vanilla in that. I had one everyday for a few months but got tired/bored with them. I havent had one in a while. They really didnt do the trick on waking me up, I guess cause it was cold and not hot. Regular coffee actually makes me a little sleepy, go figure.
