Saline Rinse for nose

For those of you that use the saline rinse, have any of you encountered mold, in the bottle and in the straw thing ..... I have, and I would like to know how to avoid this situation, so my question to you guys is how do you clean your bottle and straw thing and where do you guys place the bottle when your done and how do you set it down?

What I do is when Im done I will rinse the bottle with warm water and occasionally put soap in it once in awhile and the nose piece I rinse with soap and water, so I was supprised when I saw the mold in the straw, since I clean it with soap every time I use it. When Im done I place it on the kitchen counter and place the nose piece on the bottle, which I probably shouldnt do. Im guessing that is where Im getting the mold by placing the nose piece on top.

I would appreciate any replies regarding this little situation Im in right now.

Hey, Jennifer,

I use the saline rinse, but not quite the way you do...what's a straw thing? *lol* I mix my own rinse. I take a bottle of water (16 oz), add two teaspoons of salt and a pinch of baking soda, and shake it all together. Then, when I need to use it, I pour about 30 ccs into a small medicine cup and use one of those big nasal syringes to draw it up (15 ccs per nostril). Then I 'shoot up'. Then I rinse the syringe and cup with warm water. Never encountered mold before. I have noticed that, if I don't use the saline mixture within, say, a week, I'll start to see little stringy things floating in the mix and I have to make a new batch. But I've never had mold...

Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I know what "straw thing" you are talking about. I believe my daughter uses the same nasal wash system that you do (Neil Med). She has been using this system for about a year now and we've never encountered mold problems. We just rinse the unit (bottle & straw) with water and lay it (straw separate from bottle)on a clean paper towel to dry. Our booklet says that if you feel the system is contaminated you should use 70% isopropyl alcohol to clean it & rinse thoroughly with distilled water.

try a neti pot - its basically the same idea, but you don't have a slim straw that can gather bacteria - its easily washable.

I do use the neil med, same as your daughter does, also i will wash the bottle and straw out with alcohol, I havent used it yet for almost a week since I noticed the mold, but as soon as I get it all cleaned I will start it back up again. Thanks for your replys

Here is a couple of photos that I got off the internet for Lilith, this shows the stuff Im talking about.

Oh, okay...didn't know they made anything like that. You'd think I was a noobie at this... Thanks, Jennifer.

your welcome, its a lot better than having to mix it all up yourself, the packets are already mixed for you all you need to do is put it in the bottle of water.

I see the Neti Pot was mentioned. Can you tell me more about your experience with this? It has been suggested to me. I was told about using the recipe mentioned above (water with salt and baking soda). I have also found that Grapefruit Seed Extract (Citrus Seed Extract) can be added to the rinse. I am interested because GSE can kill Pseudomonas. Anyway, any info would be appreciated.

I just squirt it up.(feels like I just inhlaed the ocean). the can last about a two weeks and then I throw it out when I am done.. It has a long straw attached to it... and I can't see in it to clearly.... I just grossed myself out wondering if that is growing anything in there...ICK>>>
