Salt Crystals???

Today I picked my son up from daycare. It was super hot today and I saw this white stuff all on the back of his neck, on his hairline, and on his scalp!! It freaked me out so much that I cried when I got home with him. I just don't understand. My son has had a borderline sweat test (at a certified CF center), so why would he have this??? I really hate this and one thing just keeps happening right after another! It was definitely salt because of course I tasted it (yuck). I felt like it sucked all the moisture out of my tongue! It tasted saltier than a french fry!! Sorry for going on and on about this but I just hate this!! I am expecting a call back from the doctor tomorrow because I called her earlier about enzymes. I will tell her all about it but tonight I am freaking out! Should I be doing something for him? The poor kid seemed so out of it when I picked him up today!! I gave him some pretzels and gatorade and he sucked it right down and seemed to perk up a little. Now he is sleeping like a baby. I just feel so bad and I can't do anything to stop it! Thanks everyone. I just really needed to vent about this. I really hope everyone is doing well. I hate that so many people are going through this.

Poor baby (and momma)!

I'd talk to your daycare tomorrow and let them know that your child probably needs to be given extra drinks and some pretzels or saltine crackers. Maybe send some gatorade and pretzels along and if they notice the salt to make extra sure they get him something salty and something to drink.

DS has his own salt shaker and when I picked him up last week the daycare director say he was running laps around the playground, so she brought him in early. He was eating salt out of his hand and having a drink.

Can't remember how old your son is, but you may recall my son's sweat test was a normal 32. Not so sure today that it would be so low based on the condition of his baseball cap -- used to be purple, now it's white. He was licking it on the car ride home a couple weeks ago.

Thanks so much for your response! I felt so much better after typing all that out! My guy is 4 and a half. He always tasted salty to me but I have never seen anything like that before in my life!! I have read a lot of your posts on here and on healthboards. You are always so helpful. I am going to send salty stuff tomorrow. Cute about the baseball cap...not cute that he is salty, but I think Marty was eating his salt too (EWWWWWW).

DS is out of school and has begun summer activities and these past few days have been really warm. His daycare knows to provide him with a salt shaker or salty snacks and they all get plenty of water. Monday the back of his navy blue t-shirt was flecked with white salt spots and usually his baseball hat resembles a salt lick.

Last night after tennis lessons in the morning, walking and going to a couple parks with his daycare he started gymnastics in the evenings. After supper he asked to go to bed and was out by 8 -- this coming from the child who is usually a night owl.

So a reminder for the salty boys (and girls) -- plenty of water/beverages and salt. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I've heard a dr recommended adding salt to a gatorade for outdoor play in heat. Also, some cfers take tablets of salt to boost their salt intake.

Salt crystals were the symptom that originally alerted my doctor to my son's CF. I noticed salt crystals all around his hairline when he was just 2 months old.
He has always had problems with dehydration too. He gets cranky and a little "loopy". Usually gatorade does the trick.
