Salt water swimming pools

I see from a quick search that the swimming topic has been posted before, but I don't see a post specifically addressing the salt water swimming pools that seem to be so popular here in Florida. I'm curious to know if any of you have them, swim in them, etc. We were told by the docs in our CF clinic that salt water pools were an absolute "no" for people with CF because the chlorine generated by this system is not high enough to kill the bacteria people with CF are at risk for. It would make sense to me, then, that if the pool were kept at a higher chlorine level it would by okay. Any opinions on this?

We are moving in a couple of weeks to a street where 3 of the immediate neighbors have lovely salt water pools. Last night we drove over to check on the new house and our kids were invited to a (salt water) pool party coming up. Leila is an excellent swimmer and loves it so much. I want her to get to participate and I'm not a germ freak, but after clinic said absolutely not I just wondered if there was a way for her to still swim safely. Of course it sounds a little strange, I'm sure, to someone you just met to say "Oh yeah, we'd love to swim in your pool and why don't you jack up the chlorine level so my CF kid can swim too." Yeesh.
Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Hi - I have a salt water swimming pool, and actually we turned ours into one because our doctor said it was better than the chlorine pools. I am totally confused now, Maci swam all last summer and never cultured anything until this winter. I will definately try to find out more info on this as soon as I can. Let me know if you hear of anything else. We live in Texas, and now go to clinic in Houston. Mom to Maci wcf W1282X and DF508

Would be interesting to hear. I know studies with hot tubs show more potential for bacteria, etc. because of warmer temps, more opportunit for things to grow -- whereas pools are usually a safer option because of cooler temps...

Another thing to consider is asking your doctor for some documentation supporting his concerns with saltwater pools. If our local pulmonologist had his way -- DS would be bubble boy. He didn't support our decision to enroll DS in swimming lessons because of the increased chance of being exposed to molds.

I swim in pools and hot tubs, regardless of the OH NO! reaction/rules. So I'd swim in a salt water pool, a fresh water pool, whatever. We actually have a pool in my house, and if I want to swim, I swim. But that's me.

I swim because my scoliosis makes other exercises difficult. I also have read about chlorine pools being bad for lung conditions, so it's a catch 22 it seems. My cf drs support my swimming, so I try not to worry about it. I do Lysol the shower I use before I go to swim, just to keep it a little cleaner .

Have you tried googling "saltwater pools?"

We have a local saltwater pool, which takes its water from the River Clyde, now I'm pretty sure that they use chlorine and filters to clean the water. I posted about this some time last year. I will have a root around, see if I can find it.

found it, and if I knew how to link it I would have. LOL
Here's a link to our outdoor pool

I would imagine that all salt poos would follow strict guidlines
