I for one and very concerned. However, most of that stems from my traveling with my job. I am constantly flying in and out of major airports and my home airport is a major connecting for fleights to Asia. Not only am I concerned for my health, I am just waiting for them to try to quartine me, thinking I have it! Luckly so far, I have not had any major coughing spells around the terminals or on the plane!

I have to say that it is a scary thing. My daughter (16yrs) is one to really worry about things like this. She isn't "paranoid" but worries when going back to school after having been on IV antibiotics, worrying about other kids and thier colds making her sick again. It doesn't keep her from going to the movies or to the mall though. She has asked why (or least we haven't heard) they don't say what states it has shown up in, here in the US. We have a trip planned to Fl. this summer and we are flying, she's now concerned about coughing on the plane and that they will think she has it. I worry about other passengers (international) mostly because we are going to Fl., major tourist destination. B, have you taken any precautions with your flying since this has broken out? Liza

I'm 26F WCF living in Toronto Canada...where SARS is a serious problem. I ride the subway every day to work, you should see the look on people's faces when I cough. One guy was sitting beside me and actually got up and sat somewhere else. I work for a company, in which I take some phone calls from time to time. During this one call, a woman told me to "watch out for people who cough". I told her I have CF and cough A LOT, therefore it isn't always the case. She said her Dr. told her and she's not taking any chances. I do watch what I touch and ALWAYS wash my hands. SARS is very scary but I try not to worry about everything. I do take precautions but there's only so much I can do, without being paranoid. There is a lot of risks we take having CF, that's part of it. I live my life to the fullest and I'm thankful for each and every day. The way I see it...everything happens for a reason and if it's going to happen...it's going to happen.

Hi! I am taking my 2 children with CF to the Bahamas next month and this SARS does really concern me. I thought about having them wear masks but they are young and would never keep them on! Yes, its a scary disease for people that already have respitory illnesses to begin with but we cant live in a bubble and let it keep us from living our lives (same as CF). Jen

So far I have not really taken any big precautions except washing hands constantly and trying to be aware of my surrounding and who is around me. If possible I try to get a row iin the plane to myself which I usually can because I usually do not fly on full flights. I did have my DR to write a letter to "whom it may concern" explaining that I have CF and what it intals with the respotory problems. So far I have not had any problem. However today I was walking through the airport and started getting hot and coughing---more from sinuses than anything and people where giving me looks! But I do not let them bother me. I will explain to prople who sit next to me on plane if I start coughing. From what I have read it takes close contact to spread. I just try to spend as little time in the airports as possible!

I am 31 years old with CF. I have 4 kids and am doing fairly well, but this SARS scares the heck out of me. I called my dr. to see if we should be taking any precautions and I felt like they weren't really taking me serious and I never really got any answers. I am not sure what precautions to take. I was thinking about wearing a mask, but I can't breathe in those things and they make me cough worse. I will if I have to though. I like the rest of you am very concerned. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0">

That was my main concern. We are also going to FL. this summer for vacation and I am worried about all the international travellers. We see our CF doctor today so I think I will discuss this with him.

You know what really concerns me about SARS. The fact that having Cystic Fibrosis (a relatively unknown disease by the general US public) causes us to cough, which is a sign of SARS infection, will cause people to avoid contact with us. Or worse, since George Bush has signed an executive order allowing for police to apprehend and quarantine any individual suspected of having the disease, people with Cystic Fibrosis could be arrested and detained until Cystic Fibrosis is confirmed.

In response to the last message. I have gone to the CDC site on SARS to see what the guidlines were for detecting suspected infected people. The guidlines for airline personnel made me wonder if we might be flagged if our daughter had a coughing attack while at the airport or on the flight to Florida this summer. I couldn't find any real answer to my question on how the flight attendents might decide themselves that our daughter had SARS. They had a spot to contact them with any questions not addressed on the site so I did. Of course I got the normal reply, we are so busy and jammed up with the SARS concern that we can not answer individual questions but please look at our site and if you have any other questions please contact us. (and we'll give this same answer again). So we have decided to get a letter from their CF doctor before we leave stating that they had just been examined (which we usually do before a trip anyway) and that they have Cystic Fibrosis and that coughing is normal for them.
