Saw the new doc last week, got results yesterday

Yep, agree with what Ferris said.

I was first diagnosed with diabetes thru a routine blood test. My glucose was 250+ and I explanined to the doctor that I had had pancakes that a.m. with syrup and kool aid at lunch just maybe 30 minutes before blood was taken & he said "Doesn't matter, I could have just had all of those things, and more, and no way would my blood sugar ever be that high, you have diabetes." I did a 2 hour glucose tolerance test shortly after that, & he was right, I had CFRD.

So I suppose if your random glucose test was high and your A1C (3 month average of blood sugars) was also high, that would pretty much indicate diabetes or a glucose intolerance at the very least.

Having said all of that, I am still on pills for my diabetes (vs. insulin). I think you get better results with insulin, but this works for me at this time. With your history of fatty liver (may want to lay off the liquor some-lol), insulin may be the route to go for you.

I think the IgE blood work tests to see if you're showing an allergic reaction to the aspergillus, but may not indicate the actual presence of aspergillus in sputum, I would think a sputum culture would do that. Does that make sense?

You can certainly call the doctor's nurse and
A) ask them to send you a copy of test results and/or sputum results
B) simply ask them exactly what showed up on the tests.
I do this often.

Let us know what you find out when you see the other doctor re: fatty liver and possible diabetes.

Glad your doctor is at least cute, too bad she isn't well versed on CF, huh?

In all seriousness, I wouldn't hesitate to point them to the CF Foundation's website to collect information on CFRD, etc.CFRD

Good luck in getting all of this squared away.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I also was able to talk to my parents and sister today.

My sister was also giving helpful information and advice about the diabetes and fatty liver..I didn't catch what she said about the liver, but she said she'd send an e-mail about that for me. I think she was either mentioning medication which might end up as a different name in Japan, or a simple remedy (along with refraining from liquor which I don't do a whole lot of, anyway )
She added that the A1c is accurate but it doesn't necessarily say "diabetes", it could also just be "insulin resistance" or just "pre-diabetes", which means further testing.

I could probably ask my doctor to forward the last culture to the doctor I saw and see what else they need for an update. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the data from the blood tests and cultures with me. I just brought the results of my PFT's and my CT photos at the appt.

I havent read all this because I dont have time, but I did want to clear up. IgE levels will tell you if you are allergic to aspergillus, not if you have it. You need a sputum culture for that. My culture came back positive for aspergillus but my IgE level was normal (they tested it at my request due to the fact I had a mild skin allergy to the mold during a skin test at the allergist).

They can test for diabeties by you Hemaglobin A1C. If it is over 7 (or that's the number for my doctor) they get concerned. Obviously if it is very high then you would have CFRD. I think they do the fasting test just to get a read on you, to keep a check on things or if they think you have diabeties, but I dont think it required for dx. You can still have sugar issues if your A1C is okay. My sugar bottoms out a lot, especially when I am getting sick or stressed. I have a blood glucose meter that I keep a check on my numbers, usually when my sugar feels like it's dropping.

I hope you get feeling better Fred. "CF-virgin doc"...lol, never heard it that way before.

I just wanted to say hi Fred! Its great your lung function has remained stable. Just keep on top of the other things.

You must feel like a guinea pig being the first CF patient for the new doc. But you are getting great advice here so you can educate her if necessary.

Just a thought, is there a CF doc network for her to hook up with?
