Scamming people using CF???

OK, so I have to ask this as someone who fundraises for CF and have for years... Just recently I have started using the internet for fundraising... I am finding that not as many people donate using online as I had originally thought... Is that because the fear of it being a "scam"? I know alot of people have Paypal accounts, so it doesn't seem that security would be the issue and if that is, we offer an address to send your donation to... I know times are tough in this crazy world, but that is why we went with $1 for the Power of 1 Person...
I am just looking for some feedback and please beck honest, I won't take it personally...
I know there have been some scammers out there, and it just hurts my heart that people would use our disease as a way to make money... I try to have a more "personal" relationship with people... If anyone has any questions, that is why I have a phone number published in case anyone needs to talk to me... So please any advice would be greatly appreciated...
Thank you

I hope this topic doesnt get drawn out, but to answer your question......YES

This forum had experienced such a thing this past Summer. The poser took our time, compassion, tears, prayers, thoughts & for some even $$ (suppose to be for a WII system).

It tore our membership apart!

P.S./BTW

One of the reasons you might not be getting a huge response from the CF community is because many save their $$ (even if just a dollar you are asking) for their own CF fundraising like the Great Strides or with the economy the way it is....maybe towards a copay of a med.

I feel like I'm constantly bombarded with requests for charity donations at home, work... I donated over 10 years ago to a charity and choose to no longer support that cause and I still get calls several times a day during their annual campaign asking for a donation, despite my telling them I'm no longer interested.

With some requests for money, I like to know exactly where the money is going. The charity that's been stalking me for several years, was a national charity (local chapter), but the reason I know longer support them is because the money I sent them didn't go for research, but paid for tickets to send some people to a local play.

If a coworker is raising money for their cause, I'll usually donate some money to them, but nowdays, I tend to donate soley to a few of the same national charities. Or I'll buy an item in which a certain percentage goes for a cause, like a t-shirt or jewelry.

I know the CFF has really pushed online donations for great strides, with the idea that people will donate larger amounts online; however, most of the people I contact still prefer an old fashioned letter in the mail asking for a donation and sending a check...

I have donated to a few transplant funds, but I am more suspicious these days. Just the other day I saw someone who used to post here on another site asking for money or gift cards to a grocery store to help because the economy is so bad.

Since you asked...

I think it's great that you or anyone wants to raise money for CF, but I think people want to donate money to what they know is a bona fide charity, one that is registered that has independent accounting of how the funds are used. Just because someone has a paypal account, doesn't mean the money is going to be used in the manner in which it was presented.

And if the founders have CF, one might ask if they are going to be the first recipients of the money. I am not saying that YOU would do this, but others might have less honest intentions.

I also think when people do fundraising on a smaller scale, they want something for their donation. I know this sounds odd, but that is why organizations have raffles, walks, bakesales, and bracelets. Which I know that you are involved with also. But if people are not responding to just send money to a paypal account, this is why -- no matter who small the donation is. They could just send it to the CFF and know where their money is going to.

So I would say bravo to raising money by holding events or raising money by more typical methods, rather than asking for money to be deposited into a paypal account that is not registered as a bona fide charity that by law has to supply registration and independent accounting. And if you are a registered charity, then you must supply that information, so that people can check it out with the governmental department that oversees charitable donations since donations are tax deductable when the charity is legally registered.
