Scared about being under Anesthesia

Hi,

I have to have all of my wisdom teeth pulled in a few weeks. They are impacted pretty badly, so my dentist said I should be put under for it. One of them is way up behind my jaw bone, so I definately need to be put out. But other than some Bronchs I had when I was real little, I've never been put out. I just wanted to know if anyone has ever had to do this, and if there are any concerns with breathing, or other CF related stuff. I'm pretty healthy, with steady Pft's, so I don't foresee anything.

Eh, it sounds scary at first but I can assure you that it's nothing really. I've been under ::starts counting:: waaaay too many times. I've had no problems. Usually if you're going to have some problem with being put under anesthetics you'd have had it with your previous bronchs. As for having your wisdom teeth out... ouch. Don't eat solid foods right away. Anyway good luck!

Brady will be put out tomorrow for his 7th time. He is only 4 years old. It is scary, but he has been ok thru all of them. He had 2 teeth pulled back in March and did ok.

Hi, thanks for the responses,

So, Angie, are there any extra precautions with being put out as far as breathing?
Is it harder to breathe? I know with a major surgery you are intebated, but for teeth, I won't be. So I just breathe normally, right?
This may sound dumb, but what if I cough?

when i had my wisdom teeth pulled, they just didn't put me "as far under" so basically i got a little bit of nitris oxide and an injection of valium... and that was it... basically my whole ordeal went pretty smoothly..

If YOU are concerned take extra care to do your treatments etc the days beforehand to make sure you are at your best. If the dentist is aware of your health issues they should address it accordingly. My oral surgeon that has pulled my teeth put me under only according to my health the year leading up to that time. If I was having a bad time he used the "laughing" gas & novicaine. Of course I never had extensive work done like what you are discussing. Most reputable dentists or oral surgeons know what to do. There are people with other health issues also that need to be treated a bit differently so I would worry to much. Besides you will feel so much better when all the work is done & u are back to normal!

Hi,

I don´t think there will be a problem, if you are in quite good health, but in case of any occuring problems this should be done in a clinic, where they have the necessary emergency equipment and not at a "normal" dentists place.

When my daughter had teeth pulled (under anesthesia) the dentist first notified her CF doc and PFT's were done prior to scheduling procedure to make sure her lungs could tolerate anesthesia at that time. Then they did the procedure in the hospital with her Pulmonologist (cf doc) on standby in case there were any problems. Following the procedure she stayed in the hospital (outpatient) for 23 hrs. just to make sure she did not have any pulmonary problems.

We haven't had any experience with wisdom teeth being pulled yet, but my daughter did have to go under anesthesia for some GI work. She was having it done in-patient at the same hospital that we go to for the CF clinic. The GI doc and we decided it would be best if she had an anesthesiologist administer everything so she (the GI doc) could focus on what she was doing -- apparently there was some type of anesthesia that the doctor could administer without having an anesthesiologist being there --

If I were you I would definitely ask the oral surgeon to get in touch with the CF doc and let them know exactly what type of anesthesiology they plan on using.

I've been under anesthesia many times, and I've also had my wisdom teeth pulled. Both were fine, other than that I'm terrified of the dentist. But that's my own problem, nothing to do with the CF or the procedure. I just have a dentist problem. Haha.

I am going to an oral surgeon. A pretty good one, he treats my whole family. So, hopefully there won't be any probs. I'm more worried about my CF doc telling me she doesn't want me to go under!
She tends to err on the side of caution. (but that's good)

Hey best of luck to you. I had my wisdom teeth taken out about 3 years ago. The oral surgeon talked to my CF doc first then they decided that it would be best for me to go fully under no laughing gas whatever, that way I could be intubated and I guess they were concerned that with the gas I would relax to much and have difficulties breathing - who knows. Anyway, I had to have all of my wisdom teeth cut out and the intubated me which I didn't see how I could have a tube in my mouth and them still be able to reach the teeth but they did. Everything went great I woke up really quick and everything. One thing I will say - I did not take ice off of my face for 3 days - I slept on the couch propped up with two bags of ice (1 for each cheek) and drank nothing but milk shakes for 3-5 days, I had no swelling or bruising with doing that. Oh and just a tip which I am sure they will tell you, but do not drink with a straw. It can cause problems with the way the gums heal or what have you.
My procedure was done at the hospital that my docs office is in too, so if there were any problems he was available.

I also went under for gallbladder removal last year. My throat was really sore after that one and I coughed a bit more (more productive) for a week or so after, but other than that there were no real problems.

I am probably the only idiot to have my wisdom teeth out while awake......lol The fear is the worst part of it, surprisingly it didnt hurt until the numbing wore off. The first two i had removed came out easily. The third one i had removed had to be cut out. I chickened out on getting the fourth one out since he told me the roots are wrapped around the jaw bone. I said i'll leave it alone unless it becomes a problem. Now that i have cepacia , i am more worried about dental work and any kind of invasive procedures.

I had the EXACT same thing with the teeth wrapped around the jaw bone! Weird. But ya, I had to get it done at the hospital and they also put me completely out. And they used an anesthetic that makes your lung muscles weak after you wake up, which was a huge issue before I went under, because they were worried how it would go with my CF. But they did it anyways! When I woke up, it was pretty horrible. Not so much the breathing, but the anesthetic they used also makes you throw up which is quite difficult to do with a mouth full of gauze. Coughing is also a hard thing to do with a mouth full of gauze! Especially when nurses are trying to shove more gauze in as you're taking it out to try to cough!! While I did notice a slight difference in my breathing for the first few hours, it was not major. Just weird more than anything. I wouldn't worry.
