Well I go to Lenwee County Vo-Tech and it states that if you miss more then 7 days you dont get credit. How ever in my IEP it says that they legally can not do that to me because I have a medical condition that causes me to miss a lot of school... How meny of you have faced this with a teacher or school system? I know their breaking the law and worst part is last year My mom 2 teachers and my doctors talked to them and told them what CF was and how much school I'd miss. This year alone I've had to argue with them 4 times.... I'm at the point where I'm not sure if I should be trying or just dropping out of my Emergency Medical Technicain Basic class. This is why my freshmen year I gave up is no matter what I did I was failing because I ended up in the hospital 3 times. Is there anything I should do ? Or is it wrong that I ask them not to count it against me since they count it against every one else who misses school?

At one point when I was in highschool I missed the last 4 months of grade 11. My school was really cool about it, and let me do all my school work, tests, and exams at home so that I would stay caught up and pass to grade 12. Every school I have been to knows about my conditions, and more often then not I was missing school. SOmetimes 2 weeks at a time, sometimes 3, sometimes 1 week.

Why not get your docs to send a note to your school explaining your situation? My docs did that for my bf's work, that he had to be on certain shifts to take care of me, that he would miss some days when I was really sick, and it worked for him.

They could be headed for a serious lawsuit if you choose to pursue one, and a hefty fine if your report this to the ADA. They CANNOT deny you credit for missing more than a certain number of days if you make up the time (i.e. ask for a personal session), do your classwork and pasts all the tests. Don't drop out, don't give up.

It is not wrong to ask them to make an exception for you. Others don't have CF or medical conditions that make them chronically ill, YOU DO. Don't let them take advantage of you!

I agree with Julie Don't let them take advantage of you. My highschool used to be like that, teachers tried to fail me because I was gone. I did the work and everything, I think it depends on the teacher, because now I am a senior and I have been hospitalized twice this year with some pretty tough classes but my teachers are more accepting, some of them don't even count the absense anymore. They are not supposed to because when I am in the hospital I am homeschooled, but some still do. But Don't let them take advantage of you!

Fugi,

I am an EMT basic. I would be interested to see how you like the course. Have you had any clinicals yet?

I know that since Courtney misses so much school that at the end of every school year they hold a meeting to see why the child missed so much. They take into consideration how the childs grades are and why they missed school. We have never had any problems.

I hope you get it all worked out and continue with your EMT course. It is the most satisfying job I have ever had!!

Austin is "home schooled" through a charter school. All his homework is done with computers, no books. He can't continue on to the next lesson unless all his answers are correct. This way, he really can't fail. All I have to do is print out some samples of his work once a month and print out his grades. He has done this for almost 3 years now. Our local college offers some courses by computer also. Maybe that could be an option for you...

Good luck and stand your ground! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

If I may take the side of the EMT class for a moment without getting everybody mad at me. I've taken a First Responders class (scaled down EMT for volunteer firefighters) and some other FF classes and they do have stricted attendance policies. The reason, you can't make up classes as easily as you can in a typical classroom setting. Each day is a specific topic that you then leave and don't come back to. Also, state law typically mandates that each student attend X number of hours of training in addition to passing the state test. An example, MVA extraction training (motor vechile accident, MVA) this is basically a jaws of life class and I belive its taught in EMT class. If you miss that day's pratical, how do you make it up? Its not easy to pull out the jaws and get an old car for one person to practice with. These classes typically follow strict government outlines, I'm assuming yours does to.

So what is the instructor to do? On one hand, he/she has a student with a very legimate excuse for missing class. On the other, making up classes is not a trival matter, a lot of material can't be done at home, and there are state guidelines that must be adheard to.

You are going to have to approach the instructor in a very compromising manner. Are there other classes going on that have staggered in start dates? If so, maybe you could attend make-up dates in those classes. Maybe you could talk about taking the class twice in the hopes of making things up that you missed the first class. I know these might not be the most desirable options, but you are probably going to have to give some in this situation.
