Scuba diving?

Ok, so I am preparing for my honeymoon and my fiance is a certified diver. I'd love to be able to dive with him, but I'm thinking that might not be possible with CF? I plan on asking my doctor at my next appointment, but I figured I'd see if anyone knows anything about diving and CF. Is there any way I could dive only to a certain depth? Or should I just stick to snorkeling/snuba?
Thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I am 20 w/cf and i have been scuba diving a few times. I never had any problems, my doctor probably doesnt know I have but I have never let cf control what I can and cant do. My doctor thinks I am insane for planning to sky dive this summer, but im going to do it for the experience. Anything is possible, but dont overdo yourself. If you dont think you can handle it then you probably shouldnt dive. Oh ya and Congrats!

Hi,

I´m 42 with cf. Diving could be a problem because of the pressure. I love snorkeling, but last year I had an infection and couldn´t even snorkel...I just couldn´t breathe anymore when laying flat in the water.

Wish you a nice honeymoon!

Hi Jenny, Congratulations! I went scuba diving a few years ago and got certified to advanced open water, I did this without asking my doctor for some reason it didn't dawn on me that it could pose a problem. Next time I went to my cf doctor I did ask him and he was a bit taken aback and mentioned the possibility of collapsed lung he asked if I had experienced any problems which I hadn't and he seemed happy enough for me to do it again which I did the following summer. ( I absolutely loved it ) So then I was reading a more up to date manual and it did say not to dive if you are having a chest infection or sinus problems because you run the risk of air trapping - the air could get trapped behind some mucus and then when you surface it would expand and cause an air expansion injury - I felt that this was perhaps being over cautious depending on how much mucus you bring up daily, at the time my lung function would have been about 45 - 50% and I wouldn't have a huge amount of phlegm ( sorry ) about 20 mls a day. I always intended to do more diving and then I asked the same question as you on this site a few months ago sorry I can't remember the name of the thread - I think it was something to do with altitude anyway a lady called either Dee or Diane I think answered my question and she told me that there can be pseudomonas ( which I already had when I was diving ) in the tanks and sometimes other infections so she said it was not a good idea to dive because of the risk of catching some other nasty bug - this did put me off, which is a pity as I would love to dive again and maybe I will risk it I'm just not sure cos I don't want to take some undue risk and end up kicking myself but I do treasure the dives that I did and it was a great experience so one day I might do it again I just don't know. Hope you have a lovely wedding and honeymoon.
