I have mentioned this to SeanDavis, and I though I would pass it along to those others who are trying the Oregano Oil...

The oil, when I use it, condenses a bit when it hits the cool temp of the saline or the Albuterol in my neb. The oil is getting through to my lungs, as I can taste the oil venture through my mouth when I inhale. However when I near the end of the therapy the neb still had plenty of oil at the bottom. I think when it hits the cool air/liquid it is not as viscous as it is otherwise. So I experimented by wrapping my vial of saline in a heating pad before diluting the oil. This was effective at getting more oil nebulized, as it kept the oil more thin and viscous, and able for nebulization. I also tried wrapping my heating pad/source around the neb while in use, and that worked quite a bit better than heating the saline in advance, though it was somewhat awkward holding the heat source around the neb for the duration of the therapy. I have not heated the Albuterol, as I think it may change the beneficial capacities of the medicine.

I want to be as restrained as I think I should be in my comments about the Oregano oil, and I believe that 3 days of Oregano Oil Therapy isn?t enough time to present sincere commentary, but suffice it to say I am content with my lung's response to this treatment and I will be continuing the therapy of inhaling the oregano oil. I have had no problems with this course of treatment.

Best of luck all.

Do you use the superstregnth oregonal p-73, or the regular stength? Also, how do you feel about thyme oil? I was thinking about using it through a facial suana (like that mentioned in the other post). Also, I recommend that tap water never be used for inhalation, (as it may contain nasty bugs) use distilled water instead.

I use the regular strength caps and oil. I will order the super strength of both next time around. Thyme oil is one oil on the "don't use for internal use" list due to it's heavy quantity of thymol, which is the majority of it's antimicrobial abilities. If you want to use Thyme oil, i'd recommend using the steam method as opposed to nebbing it. And yes never use tap water with say nebs or anything else you inhale unless it boils before it's used. Even then due to some peoples crappy local tap water, it's best to have a gallon of distilled water on hand for medical use, because boiling will just kill the organisms, and not take care of other nasties like heavy metals and the like.

Now that I know there is a cheaper alternative than high end diffusers for delivering the various oils in steam into my lungs, I plan on getting a cheat face sauna thing like the other poster did, and using that with several different antimicrobial oils. While I am fine now, theres always room for improvement.

I am the facial sauna user ( i really must get myself a login, but on dial up everything is just so damned slow!!) - i had wondered about using the tap water i must admit - but suspected that as the water boils before i inhale anything and i'm on tank (rain) water rather than a town supply, I'd be ok regarding bugs that may be living in our water. But, just to be safe, I will go buy myself some distilled water for this purpose from now on. Cheers for the heads up and i really do hope some of these natural therapy alternatives catch on and may help some other cf folks out there. My specialist's ears pricked up when I mentioned what I do with these oils, as I've not told them what i'm up to - i've only ever had one appointment with them, so i imagine at my next appointment very soon, they will want to know what i'm doing - so being in NZ, where our treatments are not quite the same as you USA locals seem to use - it could be that it will be more beneficial to some of our NZ sufferers - as Pulmozyme, Azithromycin etc are not subsidised or used very much over here.
Thanx again
Kat (37 with CF - NZ)

For the most part, their warnings about ingesting Thyme oil internally has been actually say taking a tablespoon of it. Nothing was ever mentioned regarding nebing it, as a warning with regards to internal use. I was just hesitant to neb it for that reason. For some reason, steam inhalation of essential oils (even those considered kind of dangerous like tea tree oil) is considered safe over nebing the stuff, from some sources anyways. I would say steaming the thyme oil for inhalation should be ok, especially if you do it say every other day instead of daily or several times a day. It's not too much different from what the aromatherapy sites recommend, because they get a diffuser to spread the stuff through a room, and you breath it in that way anyways.

Hi Kat here again, i have been inhaling my three oil mix twice a day for a couple of minutes each time, for about the last 6 months...........the only thing i've noticed is i seem to get the occasional palpitation or racing heartbeat for a few minutes (but not at the actual time of inhalation, or directly afterwards necessarily - it just happens at random times now and again) - this does freak me out, but i've never been sure what causes these symptoms - could be the cf itself for all i know, or the cepacia.............or any number of things. I guess it could be the thyme oil? I only have one drop of each oil in the water i inhale anyway as it really is quite strong and if i have an itchy or sensitive throat, it can be quite irritating - so i stay with the single drop of each oil, rather than two drops of each as is suggested in the recipe i found. All i know is that i've had my heart checked out and they say all is fine, so i try not to let the odd palpitation or speeding heart issue bother me.

Yeah I wouldn't pay it any mind. I used to occasionally get what felt like a weird blood pressure spike or lowering here and there, and that was before taking the oregano oil, so it could be anything. CF is weird, and with as many bugs/organisms we have in our body, slight symptoms happen all the time, and can be totally unrelated to using a supplement. Now if it was severe like fainting or blurry vision or something equally freaky, i'd say stop, but since it's not, keep on going. You are getting more benefit as a CF patient doing what you are doing than the potential side effect of an occasional racing heart. I mean, mountain dew/coffee can make your heart race also.
