Seat Belts

So my husband just got a new port and the new location makes it difficult to where his seat belt (the shoulder part, not the lap), especially like now when it is accessed. Anyone else deal with this and what did you do?

Also, he has a very enlarged spleen (the size of a football instead of the normal size of a fist) and believes he was told not to wear a seat belt because of that--but has continued to wear one anyway. Anyone else run into these issues and what did you do about? The clinic says that they can't write him a note "excusing" him from wearing one (which makes sense since they can't say that a law doesn't apply to him--but they should still be able to write a note that says that he should wear one just so that he would have it in the event that he was pulled over, etc.). With the spleen I guess it is an issue of the risk of not having a seat belt on in an accident and trauma to the spleen during an accident...

Thoughts? Thanks!

There is a thing made for young children to use with regular seat bets. It slips on the seat belt in the front at the lap, and it basically holds the shoulder strap farther to the side, so that it doesn't go across the child's throat. Maybe that would move his belt far enough that it wouldn't touch his port.

As for the lap portion of the belt, have you tried using two small throw pillows? Maybe put them beside each hip, and let the seat belt be around them, and not touching his body really. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to explain without drawing a picture. lol When Jordan had his spine surgery, we had to be really creative when it came to car rides. I'm not sure the things we did were completely legal, but we did our best to make him safe and pain free. I hope you find something that works for you.

Would putting one of those fuzzy, padded covers on his seatbelt help? Or, maybe sew a really small pillow and attach some velcro to it to strap it to his chest (so it wouldn't move and rub), and use that to cover his port under the seatbelt? I sew a little bit, if you want to pm me about coming up with something .

When I had my 3rd and 4th abdominal surgeries, I used a regular standard bed pillow across my tummy, under the seatbelt, to help protect my incision from the seatbelt's tightness and in case someone (I couldn't drive for 6 weeks) had to suddenly hit the brakes. I don't know if that is legal either, but it worked for me when riding in the car. Maybe even a travel size pillow would help?

I would think that not having on his seatbelt would be worse no matter what, because he would either hit the steering wheel or the dash or the airbag, but, that, of course, is JMHO .

GOsh I feel like your husband and I are going through the same thing, same day.. It is so odd.. My port that I got in on Thursday is dead set in the way of my seat belt as well, and with it being accessed I can't get the strap on over my shoulder..

It is not good to reposition the shoulder strap.. you have to be really careful because, me, working in a trauma center have seen it all when it comes to seat belts being on wrong.. including children being hung by their necks from them.

I don't really have an answer, right now I am only wearing my lap belt, which is really unsafe to do because if you crash all the inpact goes to your belly and can cause serious damage.

With his spleen being that enlarged.. I don't know what I would do and I am certainly not given any medical advice... but it is like the whole risk benefit, if he hits his spleen in an accident it is pretty much for sure he is going go seriously injury it, but also if he doesn't have his seatbelt on and hits his body against something in the car he is screwed.......

My best guess is some kind of cushion with a seatbelt on but again, I don't know..
I am still trying to figure my port out, and waiting to find out if and when I am actually going to like having a port in,.. because right now I don't

Good Luck
