Kirstyn and Liza -- thank you both for chiming in. You are right, I need to demand it next time. I know what she needs... its just not okay to traumatize her like this.

She's really blue today. She had a meltdown when it was time to do meds. She's hating this disease, but doesn't even know how to articulate it. I think I need to find a therapist to help her or us or something.

Does your hospital have child life? They are the ones that should be helping her with these kinds of things.

I remember them giving dolls, the little stuffed kind, that the kids can dress, put oxygen tubes on, and IV's (minus the needle of course) are taped to the arm. They are there to help explain how it's going to work and even accompany you with your child if requested. They had different things to attach to the dolls depending on what your child was going through. And were there to talk to them, get them out of their room if they could go to the play room, organize activities as a group or individually depending on the child.

For next time, if she is being admitted from clinic or directly from home, request those things I mentioned before. Stick to your guns and be firm when dealing with them once you arrive. It is your right to refuse if they are not following doctor's orders.

Poor baby, I know what she's going through. They can be so rough on these kids. I hope she has a better day tomorrow and starts to feel better quick.

Heather...We are having similar issues with Aidan. He has a PICC now and the ongoing emotional breakdowns are just heartbreaking. I never imagined it would be this bad..

He has been seeing a psychologist for about a year now and loves her! He is also starting a group a school for kids with chronic medical conditions. He constantly cries how unfair it is that he was born with this and his brother has 'nothing'. I feel your pain... Hang in there and definitely seek a good psycholgist for her.

I am so sorry this has been so hard on her. We have done full sedation for both of my girls during PICC placements. I had not even heard of the other so far. I can not imagine seeing one of my daughter's go through that ( HUGS to you and Alyssa <3 I hope it goes better next time and you can come up with a better option for her )

I am so sorry that your daughter (and you) had to endure that! It is unacceptable, period. There is no logical reason why she should not have been sedated. You know what works/what doesn't for your child and they did not listen to you. I echo what others have said; write a letter. It makes me so angry that you had to go through this. So unfair to your little one! I hope by this time that she is feeling better and maybe you have been able to go home!

Heather, you know how I feel about this and I'm 38!!! PICC lines and ports are invasive... period. They should be doing sedation for them as a standard, especially for a little one like Alyssa (maybe even for wimpy adults like me!) I hope she feels better soon. I feel for her, PICCs are no fun for either of you and it sounds like this was wasn't handled well.
