Seeing Speech for Vocal Cord Dysfunction

Tomorrow I am seeing a speech therapist for my vocal cord dysfunction. What can I expect at my appointment?? Anything invasive?? Just trying to get my brain wrapped around this.

Anyone else have a vocal cord dysfunction?? How successful was speech in helping you get it under control?

Mine is not too bad by CF doctor wants me to get it taken care of. Starting to get frustrated with all the extra stuff that CF creates. Never though I would ever need to see a speech therapist....

I was tested for it at National Jewish because I mentioned that I doubted my asthma dx as a kid and thought something else was going on (If I got injured in sports to the point of crying, my throat would close up and I would wheeze like mad).

The test was negative (a probe-y thing), but the doctor felt I should see their speech person 1x anyway. I learned how to purse my lips and blow out in order to create back pressure which opens up the vocal cords. I only get that feeling when I am hoarse from coughing, have something viral, and am really upset about something--thankfully, I haven't had to use the technique much since I learned it two years ago.

Incidentally, just a week ago, my niece was sick with a cold, was hoarse, and she started crying and gasping for air and I KNEW she was having the vocal cord spasms. I tried to have her blow out "candles" but she eventually worked out of it on her own.

I think it is a great idea to get this under control. It totally messes with breathing, and causes excess (and useless) use of asthma meds, and it makes being sick that much harder. I'd love to hear what you learn :)

That "probe-y" thing up your nose or down your throat?? Did they numb you?? My ENT the numbing thing a long time ago and I had a horrible panic attack. It is possible I am freaking out a bit and being a big baby.

I can't remember...wow, senility is setting in. I think it was via my nose and there was numbing spray. The guy who administered my test was very personable and calming. I hope you get him. Just think of it this way, though, a panic attack will help in confirming the dx if one of your triggers is anxiety/emotional upset.
