Hey guys,

Since being on Kalydeco, I've stopped using my vest; I just don't need it anymore.

Does anyone know if it is possible to sell the VEST?

THANKS!

WOW!! I love posts like this! I know you are asking a question but I love to hear how people are doing on the new drug. The fact that you no longer need the Vest, that's awesome!

But back to your question, I would say yes. I think you sell it on ebay or Craigs list. Are you speaking of the full machine, the newer light weight model? My son just got that version and we sent back his 50 ib dinosaur back to the company.

Grats on being healthy!

It's great that your are doing so well, but it may not be the wisest thing to get rid of your vest. You may find that you need it in the future and may have a hard time getting insurance to purchase you another one. What have your doctors said? Do they want you to stop your treatments "forever"?

In addition, the vest is a "prescribed" device, so I don't know if it is technically legal to sell. Another thing to consider is germ contamination. Anything you culture will be sent to the new "home". The vest would probably need to be broken down and cleaned internally, not just the exterior to make it safe for another home.

I agree with 2005CFmom Maybe some time in the future you might possibly become unfortunate and need it again. The insurance will already have on record that you have one.

As far as SELLING it, I believe it's against the law to sell any sort or medical device. Also, germ contamination is a little risky like 2005CFmom has already mentioned.

I suggest donating it, as there are many people out there that do not have very good insurance or can't afford one. Although I would still have it sanitized when doing that as well.

Kalydeco is not a cure. You should still be using your vest and exercising, even if you think you don't need it. UNTIL your doctor tells you to DC the vest. But not until then.

Looking back at this post, it seems I was a bit hasty in what I said, as in "I am so glad you are better, you can sell it on ebay". I actually agree with the above posters. Kalydeco is not a complete cure, they still do not know what the drug will/or will not do in 10 years from now. The Vest is a very expensive piece of equipment and some insurance will ask where or what happened to the other Vest if that time comes. Its best to keep it around, its also good to have around as a reminder as how well your doing that you do not need it. The more I thought about it the more silly my post sounded. Your vest probably does have bacteria that you can never fully clean and it would be unwise to sell it or even donate it to another. Now the machine, it might be possible to donate it if you want to do away with it. But again, you might want to hang onto this for another couple of years.

As far as sites like ebay or craigslist. Not 100% if you can or can't sell this type of device. I do see people selling the feeding machines (Kangaroo feeding pump) on ebay all the time. Only way we were able to get one of these was by Rx from doctor to the DME company. So I really do not see a big difference in selling The Vest vs. a feeding pump.

I have looked at this and from a legal standpoint you can't really sell in the US, IF the person is intending to use it w/o a prescription. However, there is a pretty active used market in Canada & overseas (primarily for the Hill-Rom vests) due to a lack of access and the laws are not so clear.

As others have said, don't sell unless you are sure you never need again; and there are risks regarding sanitizing, but ultimately the issue is just not to run afoul of the law.
