Sensitive Skin & Adhesive

I have a problem with Adhesive on my skin. My skin is very sensitive. When my port is accessed, with in the first week I begin to break out and itch under my tegaderm. When it is time to change my needle & dressing, when we pull the tegaderm off, I will have raw places or even tears in my skin that bleed. It like the Adhesive is eating away at my skin. I can't use any of the skin preps because they cause me break out in a rash and itch. Even after using paper tape for a week can cause raw patches. Sometimes I have to put an ice pack on the area to calm the itching and redness down. I'm sure I am not the only person with this problem. I was wondering if anyone had any tricks, tips or secrets to help with dealing with Adhesive "burns" on the skin? Especially if you have to continue to reapply the adhesive product on already raw skin? Any advice is welcome. Thanks

Many people in my family have the save problem. I am not as sever as you are but my daughter almost is. When she got out of the hospital she has red rashy spots all over her poor body. The only thing I can suggest is to not use adhesive when possible. I know that is like imposible probably but there is some stuff (not sure what its called) that you can wrap around and it sticks to itself but that is only good on the arms and legs. Something else I have noticed with my daughter is that a lot of time taking the tape off is what really hurts the skin. I try to pull very slow and use something like vasaline to wet just the tape before you take it off.

Hi Danyell,

I've heard Opsite is great. I have the same issues as you, and one of these days I'll actually order some opsite and try it out.

http://www.opsitepostop.com/

For now, I have my nurse grab some tegaderm from the pediatric unit at the hospital. It's not perfectly clear all the way around. There is a wide white strip around the border of the tegaderm and for some reason my skin doesn't react as violently under that area. Then for the middle of the tegaderm I place gauze squares so there's little contact between the adhesive and my skin.

Hope that helps.

Have you tried IV 3000 in place of Tegaderm? My son has the same problem with his picc dressings. This time they gave him IV 3000. It didn't help him, but they said it does help alot of people with this sensitivity. May be worth a try for you. Good luck!
