Septra DS for a year?!

Well, I went to the doc this afternoon and the good news is that my FEV1 went up 7%. (Although not quite enough that I'd qualify for the Denufasol study.) So, as expected my doctor told me to continue the Septra DS. When I asked for how long, he said that I should probably stay on it for a year.

At the time, Alex was crying and I just wanted to leave and since I have clinic soon I figure I can just talk to him about it then. But I am literally flabbergasted. I've heard of month on/month off antibiotic treatment, but has anyone just continuously taken an antibiotic (besides Zithromax)? This sounds insane to me, especially with the possibility of becoming resistant to another antibiotic.

Apparently, he wants to "stifle" my MRSA. Well, maybe that's not the exact word that he used, but something like that. My doc usually has research behind his decisions, but I've never heard of doing this. If any of you have had a similar experience, I'd really appreciate the help.

My doctor once mentioned that some doctors will do that with Bactrim, but he doesn't like the idea of it.

Sorry--that's all the info. I have!

various docs have told me that if my MAC becomes a problem, they'll treat it with abx for 8-12 months. they only like to do this if necessary however.

congrats on the increase in lung function!!! yay!

When DS cultured steno maltophilia he was put on it and when I asked how long, I was told it would be for the long run. He's been on it for about 2 years.
