Serious Complication

I know I said I was losing my computer, but this is too important.
My obstetrician called and said there was a problem with my bloodwork results. I have tested positive for something called toxoplasmosis. It is a parasite that you can get from undercooked meats, soils, or most commonly-cats/cat feces. If you contract it during your pregnancy it is serious b/c if it goes to the fetus-of which there is a 15% chance that it will-it can cause serious brain related birth defects, and other infections in the baby.

Many people have this parasite-40% of Americans carry it and some never know it. If you get it, over time your body builds antibodies to it and you are immune and safe from further infections. In that case-I would be ok. If you catch it for the first time during pregnancy-that is the threat b/c it is a new infection to your body.
It is unlikely that I contracted it recently b/c I have had a cat for years, my whole life, and I never eat raw or undercooked meat. But there still is that worry that by some freak of nature-maybe I did contract it recently. They are doing more testing on my blood to try to see if I have a new infection or just antibodies and whatever the next step is. This opens up a whole new painful door to the pregnancy-more tests, risky tests, ect.

If any of you have dealt with this or know someone who has, can you please tell me your experience? I need information on this. I can't just go on fear, though i am unbelieveably scared right now.

Oh Christian I am sorry that you even have to deal with any of this.... I don't have personal experience with this, but I do know they can test your blood, the antibodies IGM to see if it is a current infection or not, That test should not take that long to find out, in fact at my hospital the results are back within a few days.

I am praying really hard for you, and believing that it is an old infection, especially since you have had a cat for years.....

Please keep us updated and let us know how things are going.

Sending big prayers your way,

Jennifer

So you've heard of this Jennifer-can you tell me, commonly would a routine blood test show toxoplasmosis even if it was just antibodies and not a current infection? Is that possible? I'd don't expect any rock solid answers here, but I was wondering that.

Hey Christian,

I am not a hundred percent sure and I will go back to my books to look it up, but I am pretty sure that it is the same with other viruses, bacterias, etc.

Depending on which test they did, yes you can test positive for a disease, virus or what ever, and not be in an active stage of the disease, meaning that once in your life you were exposed to it....

I will use Lymes disease as an example, there are many tests that can be done test you for lymes disease... and I believe it is the same with Toxoplasmosis as well

To tell if the infection is current they would do a IGM antibody test, which is a test, to see if the infection is current, other tests would show positive even if you were just exposed to it at one point such as IGA, IG means Immunoglobulin.... so my guess would be that they need to do an Immunoglubulin M test on you.. (IGM)

Like I said the results can come back pretty fast...As a nurse, I am always very leary to say anything because giving advice over the internet is unethical, so that is my disclaimer, this is just what I have learned interupted to the best of my knowledge...

Keep us updated,

Jennifer
