severe absorption problems (maybe TMI)

Looking for some input. I have never had the best luck with absorption (like many of us I imagine). Even so, I have never taken too much pancrease because I normally get obstructions. So, I take a lot of pancrease, gain a few pounds, get an obstruction, then lose that weight. Thats how it normally has been. Well, it has been different the last few months, since my last surgery (for obstruction). Now, I can take more pancrease sometimes. These past 3 weeks though have been horrible. I normally never had excessive gas, and normally had 3-4 bm's per day. The last 3 weeks, I don't seem to be able to absorb anything. I eat, I go to the bathroom-sometimes what I eat comes right back out. I have upped my pancrease to 10-12 per meal (MT-20's). Still, no luck. I am constantly bloated, if I'm not bloated, I feel hungry. I am borderline cfrd (I don't know why I am considered borderline, or glucuse impaired, my 1 hour OGT came back at 287). Anyone have any suggestions or experience this? I am slowly losing some pounds, and keep sugary drinks coming in like crazy just for some energy.

Hmmm,I don't have a lot of experience with PI, but I'll give it a shot <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> . Have you tried changing enzymes? I tried just about all of them before I found one that worked for me when I had to start them back a few years ago. Or tried probiotics? Or been checked to make sure you haven't developed a food allergy (or lactose intolerance)? Could you have developed irritable bowel syndrome (can we get that with cf too)?

What was your 2 hour blood glucose number, if you don't mind me asking? Sugary drinks can give you the runs, so you might want to stop or cut back on those. 287 is high, even for a 1 hour number- I would ask about a rapid acting insulin and see what they say. Are you seeing an endocrinologist? High sugars can cause inflamation, which might be making things worse. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Well if your sugar was 287, you are not borderline, your full-fledge diabetic. 10-12 enzymes is a lot I would say. The max I personally take is 8 or 9, and that is considered a lot. I was told by my nutrionalist to cut my enzymes down because of a chance of obstruction. I tried a few brands of enzymes, but Creon 20 seems to work best for me. I take 1 enzyme per 5 grams of fat in foods I eat, and combined with those reflexology insoles I wear, I have 1 BM per day and they almost always are normal. But if you have another obstruction, my experience is that vitamin C is a laxative. I can't even take 250 mg without hitting the toilet. There is no chance of toxicity from it, so it can only aid, not hinder you, and it's great for your immune system.

Sounds like your body is trying so hard to get rid of the excess sugar in your system that it is sending out all your nutrients along with the sugar as waste. This is actually really common in untreated diabetes. Just look at Jake Plummer, quarterback for the Broncos. He dropped a ton of weight before he was diagnosed (yea he's type 1, but we both need insulin). If I were you, I'd see if your clinic would suggest an endocrinologist familiar with CFRD and maybe get on some insulin. Sounds like you already are speculating that you have CFRD and already know that need better treatment?
