Sharp, random chest pain

That happens to me on a rare occasion too, though it's never been as painful as you've described -- but it does hurt if I take too deep a breath. It's usually followed in the next 48 by coughing up a tiny amount of blood. Never a lot, just a dot in my sputum. I got it checked out and nothing looked unusual. I think between harsh meds and airway clearance, we can put our lungs through a lot, even aside from any latent infections. Anyway, if there's no significant problems for you, I wouldn't worry too much about it -- just maybe bring it up at your next regular appointment.

Maybe it is plugs; that's kinda what I was thinking initially. I don't know if I've ever had them before (is there a way to know?).

I'll definitely try and remember to bring it up at my next appt...thanks for the help!

I told my ped doctor b/c I would get them rarely too, and when they asked if I had chest pain I told them that this is what I get. The only explanation I remember was them saying it is probably a plug breaking loose. They also we not concerned at all... if it hurts for a long time then you are in trouble b/c it could mean collasped lung I believe.

I have never 'seen' a plug that I know of, some people have talked on here like they see little cylinders of mucus or something... which has never happened to me. My mucus always comes up as mucus globs. I consider a plug for me to be just a bunch of mucus though now, but I get the pain everyonce in a while, and normally I talk myself into taking one deep, quick breath b/c it seems to "break" it free faster so its stop hurting... and like another mentioned, sometimes I will cough up some blood (just streaks if that) but I think thats b/c I pulled away some of the lung wall or something along w/ the mucus.
