Shortening my routine

Okay, my vest, and nebulizers take a combined 5-6 hours a day to do. Not because the treatments take so long, but because it takes a long time for me to get stuff out of my lungs.

I don't want to leave the junk in my lungs, but I feel like sometimes there are things I could cut out. For example: The vest doesn't bring stuff up every time. But I've been doing it two-three times a day anyway. Pulmozyme, I do twice a day, maybe I could cut back to once.

The one thing I feel like I can't change is the hypertonic saline because it really gets the stuff out of my lungs when nothing else will. Problem is, the coughing it causes wears me out and the time I spend doing it is usually one hour to one hour and a half. Not that the medcine takes that long to come out of the neb, but because I cough so much and have to take breaks in between inhaltions.

So, do you think it would be wise to cut out the vest in the evenings and just do pulmozyme, hypertonic saline and colistin for about an hour and half every night? The pulmozyme takes about 15 minintues. I don't do it in the eflow anymore becasue it was making my chest tight. I do still use the hypertonice saline in the eflow.

I feel like I need to shorten this routine because I feel like I have no life anymore.

Perhaps you can consider some alternate methods of CPT, such as a percussor or the frequencer.

My wife has issues with hypertonic saline causing her to cough too much, and we've noticed that reducing the salt percentage down to 5 or even 6% has helped. So it's still useful, but doesn't cause her to cough uncontrollably.

Can you do the vest in different positions? PErhaps all of your mucus is at the bottom of your lungs (due to plain gravity) and that if you could do your vest in a more horizontal position, it may get stuff out easier?

Naturally, you should check with your doc before changing your routine...

Good luck,

It does help if I can use the vest with my legs up in the air and my head below so I can get gravity to assist with the vest. Problem is, its hard to hold that angle. I used to have one of the those PT tables when I was a kid and it was tilted for CPT therapy. Don't have it anymore but wish I had something like that to use with the vest.

I think alot of people only do Pulmozyme once a day, but that will only save you 15 minutes....not much time when you're talking about hours! Do you exercise at all? Not trying to add more to your list, but with me, exercise brings the junk up fast. Maybe it would mean less time trying to cough it out during treatments. Also, do you nebulize at the same time you do your vest? That can save alot of time, and everyone says it is just as effective!
