Shortness of Breath and Hydration

Hello. Me again. I was just noticing today that I've been very short of breath. I've also not drank nearly the amount of water I usually do, or should be drinking. So, do you think this has anything to do with the SOB?

The reason I ask is cause usually, when I drink a lot of soda or coffee and less water, I get this way. Sometimes I notice it, others not. Just wondering if anyone else experiences this? Seems at this point at night, no amount I drink will make up for my lacking throughout the day. I'm a bit worried to go to the gym like this, but I'm going to go and bring my water bottle with me.

sonia,

i have never had this happen. when i am dehydrated i feel like stuff in my lungs is just stuck, but not necessarily short of breath. also, even though i only drink 3 or so caffeinated beverages a day, i never feel this way from caffeine, only alcohol.

ps -- why are you anonymous?

Whenever i drink soda whether it be diet or not or even juice i get shortness of breath and dehydrate easily. I dont drink the amount of water that i should and that is probably one reason i have trouble breathing so...yeahh!

YOu know Sonia, good question.....maybe you are coming down with something. I have never had shortness of breath due to dehydration, I have had stickier secretions (as Laura has pointed out), but nothing with SOB. I have been told to drink more fluids to keep my secretions thinner. If you keep feeling this way, please have a chat with your doc...like I said, there may be other reasons why this is happening to you. Hugs and good luck! Thanks, everyone. I just had a checkup and things were fine... I just get this way once and awhile and figured that is what it was from, but maybe its just a "bad" day, ya know? And, I happen to associate it with not drinking enough water cause I want to blame it on something... other than my lungs.

Yeah, catboogie... I have to start signing in.... I used to be ladybug or something like a year or two ago, but stopped visiting the site for awhile and now I"m just too lazy to get a login name. I should though, so it doesn't say "anon" when I start (or answer) a thread.

Although seeing the anon is an issue the real downfall of people using anon is that they can't search for something you posted about. This happens to me often where I want to reread something I read months ago - I remember who wrote it and I search for their name and look back in all posts they've written in.

I've never associated SOB with dehydration.

I believe shortness of breath & dehydration are connected. What I am not sure about is which comes first. FOr example last year my airways were so bad that I couldnt take a deep enough breath to drink a glass of water so I got dehydrated. This week I slacked off on my water intake & had increased airway problems & chest pain. Once I let up on the coffee & increased my water & got some extra rest I felt fine. I think the SOB is connected, but not maybe solely from dehydration or lack of as much as what happens with the sputum itself!

CAFFEINE is a majour role player in the dehydration if you drink alot of coffee and soda, You need to drink twice as much water over pop and coffee/tea. Sugar aslo can be a factor in the dehydration process. I notice I get extremely short of breath when I go on pop and tea/coffee kicks without balancing with water. Water is key in keeping the lungs hydrated to breathe properly. I hate drinking water but I force my self to drink at least 8 glasses a day cause it helps alot.
