Should I keep giving her Cyproheptad?
Two weeks ago 6 years old DD started taking Cyproheptad to increase her apetite. She is at 18% percentile. She gets very irritable, sleepy, mad, l she can't control her emotions. Is there anything else she can take to improve apetite without the nasty side effects. I hate seeing my child turning into a monster. She just gained 1 pound in two weeks. Is it worth to keep her on this? Do the side effects go away after taking it longer than two weeks? Please any advice is appreciated.

Just curious, how many milligrams is she on? Maybe her dose can be adjusted? My son is 14 weighs about 110 and takes 4 mg in the morning and then 8 mg at night. It can make them tired the first few weeks as your body adjusts . Do you think she is over tired and that is why she is irritable and cranky? Maybe the doctor could adjust the dose. I also think there are other appetite stimulants they might be able to have her try.

My DD had terrible temper tantrums the first few days after starting Cyproheptadine. The tantrums and bad moods slowly go away over a couple of weeks. Definitely, a lower dose might be better. Prior to last summer she was on three pills a day but the appetite enhancement had lost most of it's effectiveness so we stopped over the summer. We started up again at 2 pills a day at the end of summer and the tantrums came back. When we backed down to 1/2 pill twice a day, the tantrums went away but so far the appetite stayed good.
My daughter was at a BMI of 3rd percentile when we started Cyproheptadine HCL. She gained 20 lbs the first year. I don't remember any side effects other than sleepy at first. I don't see any symptoms now. She takes between 4mg and 8 mg, depending on her weight. I didn't like some of the symptoms of other meds. That said, please call your doctor and discuss these symptoms. Every person reacts differently to meds. Just because my child didn't have problems, does not rule out your child having problems. I would probably back off the dose a little and call right away. Good luck and let us know how sheis doing.

Call the physician that prescribed it.

While advice on side effects is great; don't discontinue a prescription med or adjust the dosing without at least advising, if not consulting the doctor first.

I used to take Periactin (Cyproheptadine) and the only thing it did side effect wise was cause me to be very sleepy all the time. It did make me hungry, but I couldn't take the being tired all the time so I was taken off of it. (Aka i stopped taking it) but see what YOUR doctor wants you to do first. Was not worth it. I was only taking like 1.5mg twice daily. I can't imagine what it's doing if she is taking that much holy Moses.

I have found over time the reasons for my not watching to eat not being hungry was related to the food I was eating/drinking. If you eat the RIGHT foods you will be starving to death all the time and put on weight. Post her diet maybe someone can make some suggestions. I will try to check back.
