Should the Vest make my daughter cough?

My son and I both stop our vests every 5 minutes and huff cough. This is very important otherwise you are just shaking down anything in there.

I cough a little bit when vesting...but not a lot unless I'm sick.

My daughter has no baseline cough and when she uses her vest it does not induce a cough.
BUT.
if she does her vest with HTS for 30 mins (vest, HTS does not last 30 mins) and then takes a very hot shower, sometimes she is able to bring up stuff then.
theory is that the vest loosens everything up and the warm humid air relaxes her lungs enough to get it out.

How many other households have this conversation.
Kid: "Mom, I coughed up some mucus"
Mom: "Really? What color was it?"
Kid: "I don't know, you want me to save it for you?"
Mom: "Would you?"

Hrm. She hasn't been prescribed anything inhaled, no inhaler, no nebulizer, no albuterol, no HTS yet. I will try pausing and asking her to cough, but she's only 2.5 and her "coughs" are the world's most fakest ever throat-clearing noises you've ever heard. I suppose all I can do is model and perhaps she will improve?

yes model Sarah. think of sending an air burst up from your belly button with your mouth open. this is a huff cough. It doesn't sound anything like a traditional cough. Perhaps I should do a video of me doing my pause routine. Would that be helpful?

That would TOTALLY rock, I would be deeply grateful! I would love to model effective clearance techniques for my girl but it's hard when I don't know them <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I would love love love to see a video of you doing it. I did singing lessons for a long time so I can probably do whatever it is, I just don't know what to do. Thank you so much!

Sarah -

I will see if I can get Emily to make a little video of her huffing technique, too. Maybe your little one would like to see a kid doing it. We also follow Minnesota protocol and huff-cough between the stages.

My concern is that your daughter doesn't do the vest with at least a bronchiodilator like albuterol. My understanding was that it it only really effective when airways are open. At a minimum, I would think she should be getting 2 puffs of albuterol about a minute apart prior to starting her vest. What do others think?

It's something to ask your clinic about, I think. Why do the vest if you aren't getting the most out of it.

Hope you are well!

Aaaaaannnnd...I forgot to mention above, Emily also only coughs with her vest when she has something brewing - even with HTS. That's why her huffing is so important. Even with that, she rarely brings stuff up, but I know it's getting stuff moving better than without!
