Showering with a PICC

Anyone have any easy solution for covering the picc line while showering. It takes me 5-10 minutes to cover it . I usually cut up a plastic garbage back and tape it over my arm. Is there anything easier/better?

I use a zip lock freezer size bag. I only slice a small hole in the closed side and I slide my arm in so it is real tight. Then I have my dad or step mom tape my arm just for added measure... I often wonder how I am going to manage when I move out on my own without someone to tape it for me...
I also, sometimes if I know my nurse is coming to change my dressing change, I just let it get wet.

I hate showering with a Picc.. but it works for the while I have it in for.

Good luck,

Jennifer

I do the same thing as Jennifer and it works great. Jennifer, you will find that you can do it by yourself also. I just start a roll of masking tape and wrap it around each end of the baggie several times, very tightly. As an additional protection, I have sometimes wrapped a layer or two of Saran wrap around the PICC before slipping the baggie over the top of it and then taped it. Still, I always just love that first shower after the PICC line comes out!

We've used saran wrap mostly with lots of tape. We've also used a rubber glove with the fingers cut off.

We should have some inventor design something for us. SOunds like there's a market!

I use a sock. I know that sounds odd, but i cut the top of a ladies slouch sock off ( i cut it right after the ankle part) and that leaves me with about 8 or 9 inches of sock that stays put. I just hold my arm up while showering and usually only the outter part gets damp from the mist and "over spray". When i am done the first thing i do is take it off, blot the iv site with a towel and hang up the sock for next time. Never really had too much problem with it as long as i kept my arm up, which is easy to do, i just hold on to the shower curtain rod.

you know what else works great? the produce bags at grocery stores. just stab your hand through the bottom and tape up both ends around the openings.

hmmmmm really stoopid question ...

dont you have like a tegaderm/opsite dressing already on your picc line/port?

When my ports accessed the only real thing I need to be careful with is at the bottom where the line comes out, so NO soaking in a bath etc, but showering I just avoid holding my arm that is accessed up for things such as washing my hair etc so the water doesnt run back down my arm an under the dressing where the actual line comes out.....

I did the same in the past when Ive had picc lines and my chest port etc...

There is a product you can get at any health care products store.

It is usually a blue rubbery like cover that is comfortable, and you do not feel like your arm is getting the blood shut off, and you can bend your arm. They are under $10 and considering all the tape and saran wrap you will save, it will be worth the money in no time. I have had mine for years and it works great.

They have other products that you use on your arm, or leg for when you have a cast.... lots of stuff out there.

i think joanne was describing what i was going to post about. it is a long clear "sleve" type of thing (no hand hole) and there is a thick blue band you velcro around the top. works great. i got mine from one of my home health care nurses but i'm sure you can buy this and other similar things at a medical supply store.

good luck!

why didn't they invent these things sooner!?!

I went back to look up this thread because I want to buy one of these things. Joanne, does your look like either of these? Both are around $25. There are two different kinds that I can tell, the one Jennifer found and this one:

Has anyone used these? We use saran or baggies at home, but I was wondering about the beach (probably no swimming- just wading). Are they worth it?

I am with Kylie, when I have my IV's I always just do the statue of liberty. I normally just hold on to the shower rod to make sure I don't forget and put my arme down. It actually has turned the chrome on our shower rod a different color...that is when you you know you are toxic.

Jane....I never used them, but I am assuming that its is something simiiar to what a professional swimmers cap is like, but around the arm. If that is correct....it seems awfully tight to me. In the shower I use the baggies etc & we also have one of those removable shower heads so I dont actually have to stand "under" the shower with the Statue of Likberty pose. WHich is great since my arm strength wont allow it!

Somebody posted this topic before and there is this website called www.desertmedicalessentials.com. They have this picc line cover for your arm for the shower. Looks and sounds great to me and I was thinking of getting it myself! I have used plastic bags tied up with tape or hair bands or rubber bands. But those just do not do the job and keep the water out that good and I need someone to make and put this contraption on me which is not always convenient.

So check out that website.
