Hi. I am new to this. But I have a question on siblings of CF. My son has a half brother with CF. I was asked to have my son tested by his father for it will help in research. I guess I don't understand how that will help. Should I then also get myself tested? I guess I don't want to put my son through something that he really doesn't need to be.

Also, does CF just "pop" up during a person's life or is it something you have from birth?

Hi, I'm sure that they want to see if your son was passed the cf gene from his father. Both parents must have the gene for a child to have CF if your son is tested and tests positive for one gene than either you or his father passed it to him. If he has two genes than he is positive for CF and he recieved one gene from you and one from his father. CF is something that you are born with but sometimes the symptoms don't come along until later in life or are just mistaken for other things. My sister was not diagnosed until she was 12 although she had digestive issues her whole life. I hope this helps you and it would probably be a good idea to have your son tested to be on the safe side.

It would be important to know at some time in his life if he were to be a carrier (because it is certainly possible) of the gene when he were to marry someone and start a family. I am not sure how it would help in research unless the son w/CF is participating in a specific research study.
