My son is 7mnths old with cf and he has been sick for the past 5 days. His cf clinic said to give afrin but that makes him throw up. My question is can whatever he has make his lungs infected? He has a bacteria in his lungs right now but my older son (no cf) and I are sick with whatever the baby has. Im srry if this questions in the wrong spot.

Have you told your clinic that the afrin is not going to work? What kind of symptoms does he have? Coughing and sneezing or more like vomitting and diarhea? Does he have a fever? If so, how long has he had a fever. Our doc says if symptoms last for more than three days to bring our DD in. Depending on what he is sick with it could possibly become an infection. It could also be viral, in which case you usually have wait it out. Is he on antibiotics currently for whatever he is culturing? We also increase breathing treatments and CPT when DD shows increased coughing and sneezing. I would definitely call the clinic back, I would also speak with my peditrician, I usually call both, because one is bound to get back to me quickly. I hope this helps. You might also want to post this in the families section to see what others have to say.

My son's CF doctor is of the opinion that anytime there is an increase of mucus production - such as from a cold - it sets up the lungs for infection. Makes sense to me: more goo down there means more places for bugs to get trapped and grow. So whenever my boy has a junky cold, he gets extra neb and CPT treatments and takes augmentin and his clinic visits are increased in frequency. We also do steam treatments at bath time (steam up the bathroom before his bath). Sometimes he gets a few days or a week of orapred (prednisone)if the mucus is particularly bad. I think when he was below 1 year old it was a liquid version of prednisone. We also give him zyrtec sometimes when the symptoms seem mainly in his nose and it is allergy season. He is almost 6 years old, but we've been following this routine for most of his years. Cold season, however, tends to be one cold after another in our house.
