Side effects from Tobramycin

Kylie

I am not still dizzy. It went away after I laid down.

Emily,

I did call the dr's office and they just said to let them know if it continued.

I am still pretty convinced though that it had to do with the tobra. I am a little nervous with continuing it.

The nurse came out on Friday to do a blood level on the tobra but I haven't heard anything so I assume it was ok. Does anyone know if it is going to effect your hearing, can they tell just from the blood work? I thought the blood work was to determine whether it was effecting your kidneys. I am actually wondering about that too because like I said in my first post, I always gain weight when on the iv, which has always been tobra. I have gained 3 lbs. in 3 days! So I am wondering if I am retaining water.

Well, I still have 12 days of antibiotics to go. I really don't feel good about the tobra. I don't know what I should do.

Thanks everyone!

no, they can't test hearing loss from your blood.

it's up to you to be aware of the warning signs such as ringing in your ears and perhaps dizziness.

Hi Julie, this was one of the first things i talked about at this site.. about 2 years ago i went into kidney failure due to tobramycin.even though they check your levels, they can chang afterwards, as was my case the tobramycin became toxic, ... there are many choices as far as antibiotics go, in my case i'm not so sure if i even needed tobra.. it happenedd on a weekend, a covering dr., i wasn't on i.v. fluids, vomiting and diareaha. i didn't know who i was for three days, had dialysis several times and a 2 week stay turned into 6 weeks... i had to go for physical therapy, for imbalance and i still (andi still have ringing in my ears.... that's why i always encourage people to watch everything that is going on, to stay on top of everything, don't be afraid to ask questions..... if you think something is wrong get to the bottom of it , it's your life... stay welll and God Bless.... Ry had similar symptoms, he was stupid and didn't watch his tobra blood levels or push the issue, and the clinic brushed him off. He lost some of his hearing in one ear. Be careful, once you lose it, you cna't get it back.

After my second transplant my doctors wanted me to irrigate my sinuses with Tobramycin. I tried it but decided it was not a good idea. I went to see two different ENT specialist and they both agreed not to use tobramycin as prescribed three times per week. I am only going to use it if I get a bad flair up.

It bothers my throat but I did hear the same can happen with Gent. It does not matter how you take the antibiotic up the nose, IV or inhalation there are always risks for hearing loss.

If I irrigate my sinuses three times daily, I am clear. I believe problems occur when we over use the meds. Medications are a necessary evil.
