I had a very bad case of nausea/stomach upset (thought I was going to throw up several times but never did) early Saturday morning. I had taken my first dose of amoxicillin (generic for augmentin) late Friday night (about 11:00). About 2:15 or so I started getting that nausea feeling. I don't recall every being so sick to my stomach. The only thing we could think of was that it was a side effect of the medicine. The strange thing is, I have taken amoxicillin before. I don't think it did much for me the last time I took it. I'm just wondering if anybody else has had this happen; have taken an antibiotic in the past and then next time around taking it you have an onset of side effects? Just curious.

What else are you taking Alyssa? The same thing happened with my son with Bactrim. He had taken it lots of times before with no problem, but when they added another antibiotic, it made him throw up. We tried taking him off the new one but it didn't help. When we took him off the Bactrim, he felt better. Weird.
I know augmenten can have that effect on people. Are you suppose to take it with food? Hope its something simple and you feel better soon.

you say you are taking the generic version of augmentin, which actually isnt just 'amoxicillin'. you are taking amoxicillin + clavulanic acid. im also guessing that when you said you have taken amoxicillin before it was plain amoxicillin and didnt have clavulanic acid in it? right? if thats the case, i would say its the clavulanic acid in the generic augmentin that is making you feel bad.

The only other med I'm taking are my usual; Ultrase MT12, vitamins & ranitidine (for acid reflux). I did take the acid reflux about 2:00, which made me think maybe it was a reaction between the two, but my husband called Walgreens and talked to the pharmacist who said it should be ok if they are taken together (just won't be as effective if they are taken at the same time). I'm not on any other antibiotic at the moment. I did eat a candy bar about 1/2 hour prior to taking it. Probably not the best food to have in my stomach, but it's better than nothing. I am taking the Amox Clav (that is also what I took before). I know the last several times, I have taken it, it hasn't really worked for me. The last time I was on it, about halfway through it, they switched me to something else because it wasn't working for me. I told the nurse when she gave me the script that I didn't think it was going to help me, but I would go ahead and try it. I've just never had this strong a reaction to an antibiotic, especially one I have taken in the past. I am going to start on Prednisone today (yippee) for 12 days. Thanks for the info.

1. Kylie is 100% correct. Amox is not the same as Augmentin. Amox Clav is Augmentin.
2. Resistance rates to penicillins are EXTREMELY high. As a result, dosing of Amox has risen drastically over the past decade. So side effects are extremely common ....

Do you have PA? If they gave you Amox Clav for PA you should hit them over the head. I doubt that's why they gave it to you, though.

Well, the doc gave me the script before they had the sputum results. This has been an ongoing thing the last couple of months (more SOB & some chest pain). I was on Levaquin last month and that helped. I went back again this month when my chest started hurting (x-ray from last visit was fine so nothing there). He seems to think I have asthma. But he went ahead and gave me the amox. The preliminary report on the sputum as of Friday was Staph Auerus(?). I probably won't know more until Tuesday. I just started the prednisone today.
As for the acid reflux medicine, I actually took it 3 hours later. I didn't actually take them at the same time. I don't think I could go without that med. I get acid relux pertty bad anymore.

Amox Clav is much much different than Amox. So thanks for clarifying. Amox Clav, like everyone has stated, is notorious for giving people GI problems. CF or no CF.
Do you have PA? If they gave you Amox Clav for PA you should hit them over the head. I doubt that's why they gave it to you, though.

When i was taking amoxicillin for strep throat about 3 weeks ago.. i got so nauseaus that i had to go home sick from work.. i almost threw up on a call.. it was pretty bad..
