I did mine without a lawyer and was approved the first time, mind you, it wasn't CF that got me the benefits (this was prior to my dx), I had other severe lung issues and required O2. Anyhow, make sure you complete the form as detailed as you can. They ask you everything, do you drive, how well can you do your daily activities (make sure that you point out if CF affects how well you do these things) right down to dressing, cooking, bathing etc. They ask how long you can sit, stand, walk...everything. Mind you, this was well over 5 years ago for me. I described what a really bad day was like for me when filling out the form. The important thing is to be very thorough. Right down to how your daily routine of meds, vesting, IV's, etc...affect you.
My doctors had a huge part in the form as well, they did an excellent job and were very thorough. If it is a doc who knows you very well, then there shouldn't be a problem. My pulmo and primary at the time filled out the doctor's part of the form. My primary actually sat down with me (took over 2 hours) and filled out every question in my presence.
There are many excellent resources online, the Disability digest is great too.
Other than getting copies of all of your med records for the future (once you are accepted, you have to go under review every so many years, it is wise to have those records at your fingertips. IF you are denied, keep appealing, don't reapply...appeal)
Good luck, it can be a long process but don't give up. Hugs, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
