I haven't read all 55 responces from my last point, but i've read most of them, and i have to tell you, I did not think this would be such a debated topic! I've noticed treands in the responces, let me guess... pretty much all of you have health insurance, right? No offence, but i think its easier to say no to socialized health care if you already are covered. I too am covered, but won't be in about a year, which is why i fell it is important. Another point also brought up in Michael Moore's film is not simply about socializing it, but improving the health care system we have now, to include MORE and LOWER the cost so that EVERYONE can afford it, and so someone doesn't have to lose their life because they can't pay for the medical care they deserve. It also makes me incredibly angry to think that some people don't want socialized health care becuse THEY might recieve less-than-the best healthcare. What about the millions of people who are suffering or dying now because they can't afford insurance. No one should settle for the health care system we have because they're benefiting while others are dying. Yes, other countries who have socialized health care have lower standards, but that is ONE MORE PROBLEM TO REFORM, NOT JUST ACCEPT BECAUSE IT DOESN'T AFFECT YOU!!! This is not an attack on anyone here, i'm simply stating my opinion because i didn't earlier.

I have very good health insurance, very small copays, always have. And I'm a filthy liberal and I'd still like to see a huge overhaul in the insurance industry. Just thought I'd throw that in.

I'm pretty liberal minded too and, even though I've always had insurance, I completely agree with the statement that no one should settle for the health care system we have simply because they are benefiting from it, especially while others are suffering and dying. Having said that, however, I do understand why many of us who ARE insured would not want to compromise the current level of care we are receiving.

I would like to point out too, that even those of us who are insured have insurance nightmares, whether it be pharmacies or home IVs or whatever - everyone I would venture to say, has had to battle at least once to get something covered and sometimes even compromise their care. Knowing that, it amazes me that people seem so quick to rule out alternative health care options (socialized medicine being just one of them) without giving them even a peripheral glance. If there is a way for health care to be improved, not just for everyone else (which I believe should be our goal as human beings) but for me as well, why wouldn't I entertain the idea of at least EXPLORING other options?

I did see the film and of course it's one-sided It's supposed to be; that is the point. One thing the film points out that I don't think has been mentioned in the other thread is that not only is health care free in some countries, but the quality of life is such that people don't have to work themselves sick just to survive, which quite frankly is what I feel forced to do. I'm not saying socialized medicine is the perfect solution - every system has problems - but we should at least acknowledge that our OWN system has problems as well, and is in no way superior.

Maybe socialized medicine isn't the answer - but I do believe there has to be a better way. As human beings above all else, we should never tolerate a system that allows others to suffer and die simply because they do not have the means to "buy" their health and safety.

Hey Banana
Reading that other thread makes me ill. I live in Canada.. Saskatchewan actually...all meds for ALL genetic illnesses are paid for in sask. Not all provinces have this coverage. In some you have to pay a health premium every year. It really takes the stress out of my life knowing that I don't have to look for money to pay for my daughters meds. Even though my hubbies insurance would cover it we still pay nothing.
We do however have to part with 25% of our income to income tax. Personally I'd rather see that money spent on health care than war.
I don't see people as being "illegal" . We are all human beings and we all deserve freedom and hope and belonging. I do have a problem with people living off the system .. If they are able to work and provide for themselves they should work.

So, if you'd like to live in sask I'll try to adopt you!!
