sinus infection

What does your child's CF center typically prescribe when they've come down with your average everyday cold, but then the cold goes away and the cough remains or gets worse? I guess that would be a bacterial infection secondary to the original virus that caused the cold. Or he winds up with a sinus infection, which causes all this post nasal drip. Then he's waking up at night coughing and clearing his throat, and having these really juicy coughs in the early AM, but then as he's up and moving throughout the day, its just a little dry cough here and there.

This happens to my son a lot, almost every time he gets a cold. A couple of weeks ago we all came down with a little cold, runny nose, sore throat, headache, cough. We were all over all of our symptoms within a few days, but his cough just hangs around. All the increased nebs, inhalers, saline spray, and vest don't seem to help. I'm waiting for a call bck from the doctor but I'm hoping they call in a script for Bactrim, that does it within a few days every time.

Does anyone else have a child who gets frequent sinus type infections, especially after having a cold? How does your clinic deal with this?

DS had a couple of sinus infections when he was a baby, usually along with an ear infection and they prescribed augmentin. Locally, they didn't do anything for the just the sinus issues and coughing they told me it was a normal CF thing and being a new parent, I thought nasty booger noses were the norm for kids during the winter.

However, his CF doctor in the city was concerned with the potential for the sinus infection to get into the lungs and prescribed a month of augmentin to get rid of the sinus isses once and for all. If that didn't work we were to try something else. It worked.

Now that DS is older, we started doing OTC sinus rinses on our own at the first sign of a stuffy or runny nose and it seems to help.

If he develops a cough, like you're describing and after a few days if increasing vest treatments don't help, then he usually prescribes Cipro.

My daughter has had a lot of sinus infections. To help them, she takes Nasonex & does daily sinus rinses. The rinses really help with the post nasal drip and help keep the drainage from turning into a chest infection. They definately do much more than saline spray can do. If she gets a sinus infection (thick greenish/brownish boogie junk from her nose & eye boogers are telltale signs for her) then she takes an antibiotic, she has taken several different ones. If she gets a persistant cough with a sinus infection then we increase her vest sessions too.

Here is a link of my daughter doing a sinus rinse so you can see what it is like, she started doing them at age 4:

Unfortunately I think your little one is too young for my info to help. With Marissa, every cold led to a sinus infection or an ear infection, usually both, until she was put on Singulair.

Maybe the doctor has an option similar for younger children.

Good Luck!
