sinus pain

hey all!

I have HORRIBLE sinus pain. Every day, all day. I used to get frequent sinus infections when I was little and when I was thirteen, I had to have polyps removed. I haven't had polyps since then, but that last time I saw the ENT (which was about 500 years ago), a CT scan showed that I have scar tissue on the side that once had the bigger polyps, which I think has caused me to have a deviated septum. I don't think there is anything that can be done about the scar tissue or deviated septum, but is that what is causing me so much pain? Am I wrong in thinking there's nothing that could be done? I mean, surgery would just create more scar tissue, putting me right back into the same situation I'm already in, right?

Do you guys have chronic sinus pain since having polyps removed? Is there anything that can be done about it, aside from a butt load of ibuprofen? I have not been to an ENT in probably about 10 years because of insurance issues. My CF doc always looks up my nose, but mentions each time that he doesn't really have the greatest equipment to see anything significant with it. I have been on flonase for a couple months, but it doesn't seem to be moving any mountains, per se. I have medicare as my insurance now, so I don't even know if I COULD see an ENT without owing hundreds of dollars, but would it be worth it?

I feel like with this pain, if I went to the ENT, I would get a "sucks to be you" kind of diagnosis. Has anyone had such bad pain and had it resolved somehow (surgery or otherwise)?

I know this is very general, but any input/experience would be great!

I am dealing with a similar issue. I don't have many polyps (at least as far as the doctor can see for now) but I am having daily sinus headaches. They are not major headaches but enough to be a pain in the face and head. I just started flonase.

I would see your ENT if you can (insurance and $$$ wise).

Usually surgery relieves my infections and headaches for a while... until those vile polyps or abscess come back.

My son is 6 and has major sinus issues- totally affects his quality of life and he suffers from daily headaches and pressure. He has had 7 extensive sinus surgeries and polyps build soon after which block everything once again. It is such a draining process for all of us. Oral abx don't work anymore so he always needs IVs. He lives on Aleeve between surgeries. You definitely need to see an ENT! Aidan's frontal sinuses are now affected which contribute to the awful headaches and pressure.

Definitely worth it to see the ENT. Unfortunately, with CF the sinus issues will always come back. But I believe that the quality of life is much better when you have had surgery. I 4 polyp surgeries between the ages of 11 and 14. Then I started Motrin, and my polyps went away (attributed to puberty and motrin). Two and half years ago, I decided it was time to see an ENT again. I had a deviated septum and LOTS of other blockages and swelling at the time. I was also getting sick a lot more and on abx pretty much all the time.

I had the surgery and felt WORLDS better (for about a year and a half). That was great for me, I was able to go off the Motrin and I was hardly sick for the whole year following my surgery. I am now looking to have another surgery simply for the relief of the sinus pain and infections. To me, it was worth it the last time because my quality of life (coughing, sinus pain) improved so much. Right now, in the meantime (before my surgery) I am back on Motrin for the pain and it sort of helps, but I want the surgery again.

If you can definitely try and see an ENT. You will be surprised to see how much better you will feel.

I've always had severe sinuses, but about age 10 I developed a headache that has never gone away! I'm 37 now! They're sinus migraines. They're all day every day.
I had to be home schooled because my sinuses made me to sick to attend public school. The pain & pressure are so bad that over-the-counter pain meds don't help. I had to go to a pain doctor.
I DO NOT beleive in sinus surgery!
I've had over 10 very extensive surgeries & many more proceduers. I know the surgeries didn't start the pain & discomfort, but I believe they've made it worse.
At 1st my surgeries were to remove polyps & mucus blockages. But then I developed scar tissue that became worse then the polyps. About age 20 my polyps stopped growing, but the scar tissue didn't. I've had at least 4 surgeries to remove it. 1st was to remove a mococele or go blind. At least 2 were to stop infection from going to my brain. I had a "frontal obliteration" in 2000 to "fix things" so scar tissue wouldn't form, but it only caused more scaring. It caused a very large painful mucocele to form on my forehead. It had to be removed or my forehead would have colapsed. I now have 2 titanium plates in my forehead.
Even tho most of my surgeries were to save my life I still feel like my sinuses would not have becme so dangerous if I hadn't had the 1st 2 surgeries.
The ENT's always think they will be the miracle to fix my sinuses, but they only make it worse! My ENT clinic is rated top in the nation.
It always scars me to see sinus surgeries being preformed on little kids. I fear what will happen later in their lives.
Sorry, I didn't intend such a long post! Please see an ENT! CF doctors don't know much about sinuses.

UGHHH..My son is only 6 and is about to have his 8th sinus surgery. We've tried everything to keep them at bay but he develops polyps and packed infection within weeks. He is constant pain and has horrible pressure headaches as well. What should we do? Surgery is the only thing that gives him some relief??

That really sucks about your sinuses, Faith!

I can't imagine how difficult this has been for you.

But please see an ENT. They will definitely be able to answer your questions more than we can. And not to overshadow what has happened to some on here...it IS different for every person! As I said in my post, sinus surgery was a godsend for me and helped me immensely. I have no lingering effects (unless you count that the inflammation comes back...which I don't because that will happen to everyone).

Please see all of your options before you make a decision.
