does anyone have bleeding that occurs during or after a sinus rinse with thier child? I am concerned about frequent nose bleeds--is this normal? when you get a nose bleed how much blood is normal & how much before I should get worried? I thought this was happening because of the sinus rinse but it's also happened today during the day & she hadn't done a rinse yet. any advise would be great.

Hello!

I do the sinus rinses pretty much everyday, and I can't say that I've had any nosebleeds.

Is is dry where you live? I know that it's winter here and the air is very dry, so I don't know if her nose is dry and the rinse just kinda disturbs things?

I wish that I could be more help!

Good Luck!

Hi,

I am curious to as to where you live and if it is dry right now.

Here in Colorado a lot of people are having troubles with nose bleeds, more than usual according to some of the docs, because of dry air. Even if it is snowing a lot, if you are running your heater more or setting it higher because of the cold weather, than that could be , probably is, the cause.

yes, when you do the rinses in dry conditions, you do disturb things that get the bleeding going.

If it is dry, or you use a heater, you could try boiling water on your stove to put extra moisture in the air or get a humidifier with a good filter. I would use distilled water either way to protect from as much junk being put in the air as possible. If you go for the humidifier, just get a little one from a drug store, cool mist is probably the best.

If the nose bleed won't stop after say 30 minutes, I would call, or if you were going through a lot of cloth or a box of kleenex, I would call. Its hard to know because it always looks like much more than it really is.

Hope this helps,

Hey Bobbi. My first thought was that the winter air is so dry that it can cause the bleeds. When Jordan or I get that in the winter, it usually is very minimal, and it stops quickly with a little pressure. That's why I attribute it to the dry air.

When I was a child, I had the worst nose bleeds! My nose would bleed for 30 min. or more, and I was even taken to the ER once for it. I also had to be cauterized. That was NOT fun! I would get nose bleeds just sitting on the floor playing quietly, and I would get them if I got a little bump on the nose. Stress would cause them too. What is really strange, is that after I reached puberty, and started having periods, the nose bleeds completely stopped.

How much is she bleeding? If it's just a few tissues, I wouldn't worry so much. My nose, however, was like a faucet, and I would be so weak and worn out after the bleeds. If I laid my head back, it would just run into my throat and I'd throw up. It was awful! Call the doc, and see if holding off on the rinses for a day is okay. Maybe there's a vessel that is scabbed over, and it is getting scraped off during the rinse, or if she picks her nose?<img src="i/expressions/nosepick.gif" border="0"> If that is the case, it should heal well in a day, and you could resume the rinses. I'd mention it to your clinic.
