My 5 year old son is going in next Wed. for a tonsillectomy and sinus surgery. They will clean out his sinuses and remove polyps. I am dreading it very badly. He has not been in the hospital at all since he was 23 months old (and that was not CF related). We were told there is a possibility he may have to stay one night there but I am hoping not. I guess I am just wanting to hear from others who have had similar surgery. How long will it take him to feel better? And how long before he can really eat regular food again. He has just recently gained over a pound and I hate to see him lose it again. It's so much work to get it on him!!

I do know of a local family whose daughter at age 3 had a similar surgery. It sounded like they had a little bit of a rough start with recovery, probably due to pain management issues, but once she recovered they had a completely different child -- because she was sleeping better, because she could BREATHE better, she was much calmer, able to pay more attention. She was also a completely different child at meal times -- she would eat because she could breathe and swallow. So she put on weight.
I had my tonsils out a few years ago and one thing I remember was to stay hydrated. Keep those scabs in the throat hydrated to prevent bleeding, etc.
