Sinus Trouble, Green Tea & Coffee

I went to a massage therapist the other day and she tried to "open up" my sinuses, as well as my lungs through the massage. This was a gift certificate, and I have one more time left which is set up for this coming Friday when I will also have my first ever acupuncture treatment.

First of all, she was focusing on pressure points to open things up as well as a face massage to open my sinuses. When I left, I felt like sneezing, blowing my nosea sn a little stuffy. I guess she opened them up! This was Friday, today is Sunday and they're still stuffy. I almost feel like I'm getting a head cold, but I know I'm not. So what is that about? Is it possible for a mere massage to effect you this much?

Also, she highly advised me to stop drinking coffee since it's such a dehydrator and has no positive benefits. She recommended I get these green tea/jazzmine pearl things. Green tea, unlike coffee, has antioxidants as well as the caffiene if you need that extra boost. I thought I'd try stopping coffee and see if I could bare it with just green tea and tried it this morning. I'm sensitive to too much caffiene b/c I'll get a severe head ache. I had a cup of this tea, did my vest, and shortly after got a really bad head ache and was still very sleepy. I layed down and took a 2 hour nap and my sinuses felt so filled up! When I got up, I decided to take a tylenol and have a cup of coffee. Getting off coffee didn't last long!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> Wow. But once the coffee kicked in, I felt like a normal human being again.

Anyone have strange happenings wth green tea or massages, or for that matter acupuncture?

Of course not. Only massive doses of antibiotics can help you. Besides it's quite possible you could outright die from a massage if your masseuse has accidently learned the vulcan deathgrip and happens to sneeze while star trek is on in the background. I would also be very careful with anyone touching you. I talked to my doctor and he said that it's highly likely that 99% of all massage therapists wear socks that they scrape across the carpet while they have a live tesla coil inserted in their behind, and their touch has a high chance of making you actually explode. I'd steer clear of this guys. My doctor recommended that instead of a massage I should just take this funny colored pill, it's made by the superduperamazingcurealltakeitforanything pharmaceutical company, he has me on 100,000,000,000,000 kilograms of the stuff daily. I don't think I should look into it though, I mean the guy is a doctor!

Oops lolz, my eyeball just fell out and landed in the cavern where my patella used to be, gosh!

Since coffee contains antioxidants, is it suppose to be an okay or healthy thing to drink like one cup a day then? I know no one dies of drinking coffee, but I was trying to change some bad habits and make more room for positive things.

Hi Kelly,

Yeah, i actually had not only naturopathic people (accupunturists, nutritionists) urge me to quit coffee, I had my Cf doctor urge me to quit it. It has antioxidants, yeah-alot of things do.....Green tea has tons more, and is healthier. Though it still has alot of caffeine in it. I stick to regular earl grey tea, or herbal teas. But-I occasionally cheat with coffee for a treat.
Gotta say-I feel so much better now that I'm off coffee!!! More alert, I sleep better, I don't get that jittery addicted feeling. It was hard to quit, and I did get crazy for a week or two. Cravings, shakes. It made me realize how addicted I was!
The doc told me that caffeine in general ups your heart rate, and our hearts work hard enough b/c of our lungs, so anything to minimize that. And, I have CF arthritis, and joint/leg swelling issues and she said that caffeine can really cause flareups, or at least accelerate flareups.
Getting off caffeine also helped with my depression. I just feel less jittery and anxious. But I didn't realize how bad I was till I got off it!!

I also have tried accupuncture-I love it! And got similar instant results like you. So, I don't think its weird. I hear that commonly.

I hope your results are good! Good for you for trying some alternative things!

I couldn't help notice the "Green Tea" in the topic, and came to take a "lookie-lookie"!
Green Tea and Coffee are two different things, just like apples and oranges, but the coffee and tea share one common denominator, they both contain caffiene.
There was a program I saw once in regards to green tea, also called "O-cha" in Japan, which described how the combination with certain foods gave some extra benefits to the body. Coffee, however, also has some chemicals in it, which helps stimulate the lungs, and I was once told the coffee helps with ashmatics, and other respiratory related things.
They both have another thing in common, they both are diuretics, meaning they cause you to run to do "No. 1" frequently if taken in high doses. I found both also cause the sugar levels to go down, meaning something to keep the sugar levels up would be suggested. having some cakes or cookies with coffee will help that, but the best thing to go with green tea are Japanese confectionaries! Or, "O-cha zuke", which is an excellent part of an afternoon meal!
For clearing sinuses, I usually would run a little bit of salt water, or some gargle medicine available in Japan to run directly in the sinuses. I rarely ever have any problems (Then again, I may be taking in more "O-cha" then most average Americans!)
Though I suggest not buying in on Sean's "Sugar-pill" remedy, he's right about the Vulcan-grip Masseuse!! Don't let thier four foot eight inch petite size fool you, they got a Kung-fu grip, that'll crush a beer bottle! (Good waste of beer, though!)

Hi Kelly

I never ever in my entire life drank one sip of coffee. I never liked the taste for some strange reason. I know that green tea is really good for you but I tried this and do not take it either (I am afraid of the immune boosting effects. Some doctors believe it is good for liver tx patients.

for my sinuses, I did use flonase but found other ways of clearing my sinuses. I do believe in accupressure point threapy but one has to keep this up. I would pay attention to where they place the needles and you can later on massage these points yourself. It is very effective.

I may be the only person that does this often but I lay on a massage table almost every day for one hour or more and drain my sinsues. Like postural drainage but I just lay there and afterward I irrigate my sinuses. IF I do this daily, my sinuses stay very clear and if there is anything up there it all comes out. This is important for me to keep my lungs clear as the cf sinuses can infect then new lungs with pseudo (of course it is nothing like cf) It is hard to even know you have mucus in your lungs. Since I cannot tell if I have mucus in my lungs I do active cycle breathing each day and a little amount of tiny yellow can come out.

These techniques that I do daily because I want to be as healthy as I can. No doctor told me to do this. The sinus therapy was my own idea

ciao for now
