Sinus trouble Please Help

I just came out of the hospital and am on IV antibiotics. This whole thing started with a head cold. My sinuses are still full. My doctor feels that if it was an infection the antibiotics will take care of it. Well it has been 8 days of the antibiotics and my sinuses are still bothering me.

Every time I breathe, I feel a rattle in my sinuses. I have been using nasal irrigations but that doesn't really seem to be helping. I have has allergy tests and I was not allergic to the 29 things they tested me for. I have had nasal polyps removed 3 times but my last Sinus x-ray was clear of polyps.

Anyone have any ideas for me. Do you think it is worth taking Claritin D or Allegra D, even though no allergies were found? How about Flonase or Nasacort? I have taken that in the past but stopped when I stopped having sinus problems.

Do you think I still have a head cold? The mucus in my sinuses has no color to it. My voice is very nasally. I sound like my nose is plugged when I talk. I don't have a fever either. I am very puzzled!

Please help.

I hate that you are still stuffed up. I know it is VERY frustrating when you are taking meds to get kick an infection and they just don't seem to work. My personal opinion I would ask the doc if there were any harm in trying a decongestant - just to see even though your allergy test showed you weren't allergic to the things they tested for. There are so many things that can be causing nasal stuffiness and allergies - alot more than 29 things.

I have had allergy testing in the past and haven't been told I am allergic to anything persay - but I tend to get stuffy every spring and often during the summer. I cough, sneeze, runny nose, itchy eyes and all the allergic symptoms even though I haven't gotten any you are allergic to ____this____ diagnosis. I think it would be worth a shot - so long as it wouldn't hurt anything to try a decongestant. I usually take ClaritinD when my symptoms flare up and also use Flonase for post nasal drip. I love the Flonase it has helped a bunch with my sneezing and definitely dries my nose out.

To add: when I blow my nose the stuff is always clear as well.

I hope that you find something to clear you out soon, so that when your IVs are over you are feeling better and not still congested.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Intranasal steroid like Flonase (which has alcohol in it that can cause nose bleed, headache and drying) or Nasacort AQ (which in 2 head to head studies vs. Flonase demonstrated equal efficacy in patiets with the most severe symptoms - but lacks the alcohol, taste & smell) can do wonders. Often times nasal terbinates as swollen from pollution, allergies, perfumes, etc. This can help.

Allegra-D or anything else with a D in it contains pseudephedrine. Also great at opening nasal terbinates.

When I have sinus issues - I just both an intranasal steroid and pseudoephedrine (also by the brand name Sudafed....which by the way is BEHIND the counter in all 50 states I think....) and it does my sinuses just well. Just remember that it takes a full 7 days to see full effects of an intranasal steroid (all though some relief can be felt in the 1st 12 hours).

And don't purchase Sudafed PE. This med does NOT contain pseudephedrine.

Good luck.

For those with good insurance coverage of meds, you can get prescribed pseudoephedrine either alone or combined with that drug whose name I can never remember: guafenisene (or something to that effect).

That saves a few bucks for me.. not much, but not gonna turn it down!

i also do the sudafed thing along with Nasonex.  the other
thing that helps relieve some of the discomfort for me is steam
with a little bit of eucalyptus in it.  like a hot shower with
a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil-opens stuff right up.
