Six minute walk test

So what is the goal of the test? I'm quite sure I can walk for six minutes, but is there a specific distance that has to be completed?

I know it's just one part of the LAS, but is walking farther better or worse?

The 6 minute walk test looks at distance, amount of O2 needed, and oxygen desaturation during the walk. I ended up doing my 6 minute test 4 times before I got listed. The first three times I ended up walking a fairly long distance without O2, the forth time was after I had been hospitalized for 3 weeks with cdif and could barely function. That was the score they used.
Good luck in your transplant journey. Feel free to ask me any questions about the process or the transplant itself.

I do not remember doing the 6 minute walk pre-Tx. I was on O2 before my surgery and couldn't walk from the living room to the kitchen w/o stopping for a break. So forget walking any distance in 6 minutes.

Now, nearly 15 yrs post-Tx, I can walk nearly a half a mile during the 6 minute walk. I believe my last attempt I made it about 2,300 feet or so. Sure I was a bit winded but it's still my legs that can't keep up most of the time

I always try to beat the distance I walked the time before. I feel that the farther you walk the better.

I don't think your score is really used to compare to other patients as much as it tracks your progress or lack of over the years. If you get much more tired or winded during the test this could be a sign of something on-setting which needs to be looked into.

I realized quickly that the better you do on the test, the lower your score. Needless to say, I didn't try that hard
