My daughter sleeps fine on her back. In the morning when she wakes up she has usually moved to her side.

It probably depends on how the CF is effecting him. My oldest had no issues with any position, but my youngest had such problems with her nose (huge adenoids + thick mucus) that she slept in her high chair (which inclined back) for at least the first six months of her life.
