Slow gastric emptying....

My son Trevor is 13 months old and was diagnosed at birth. He has always been "junky" sounding especially after meals. It isn't really congestion in his lungs but more so upper respiratory sounding. He is being treated for acid reflux with 10mg of Prilosec everyday. However, because of the congestion, his doc ordered a Gastric emptying scan in July. The test came back and showed that despite being on the Prilosec he still has acid reflux. It also showed that his stomach only emptied 42% in and hour. His doc said that he was pretty sure that was on the low side and it should have emptied a little fasted. He thinks that instead of treating him differently for the reflux that his slow stomach emptying may be the problem. He said one of the treatment options is Erythromycin. The dose would not be as high as if you were fighting an infection, but would still have most of the side effects it because it still is an antibiotic. I didn't know if anyone else has heard of this or has an experience with it?? I just don't know.. I guess you have to out wieght the side effects with the benefits. I just don't like the idea of always being on an antibiotic low dose or not... any thoughts??

Hi Katie,
The theory is that erythromycin works to speed up motility. It is supposed to work like metoclopramide. I agree about the antibiotics, especially the "mycins". I can't help you as far as if it really works though. We have never had this issue. Sorry :-(

I'm assuming that you're doing CPT as well to get that stuff moving up and out... Probably not right after eating, though DS never had issues with that. Maybe you need to look at increasing the amount of time you're doing CPT or add another treatment if possible.

My daughter (age 9) just had that test this summer and we also found that she empties slower than normal. However, since she's just moderately slower, the doctor isn't going to treat it at all because he doesn't want to add any more medications if it isn't absolutely necessary.

He ran the test to see if there was a reason that she doesn't want to eat snacks or lunch -- and this helps explain things to me. So I've made some adjustments in the amount of food I give her in one sitting, taken out snacks because it inteferes too much with meals and added more to her dinner (I added a greek yogurt shake, around 400 or so calories) since she has overnight to get it through her system. Her weight has ever so slightly increased since making these adjustments.

My daughter has no lung involvement and is much older than your son, so your doctor may have some different thoughts on how to handle things -- I'm not trying to give ANY advice on what you should do. I just wanted to let you know that we are handling slow gastric emptying without any meds at all. My daughter also has acid reflux and takes Prilosec, but since changing the amount of food at one sitting she hasn't been burping at all. (I've also taken away all sugar -- that's a whole other story -- and that may also help explain why her acid reflux has improved.)

my daughter was diagnosed at about 9 months with delayed gastric emptying and was put on metlaloclopromide(???)--reglan-- and was changed from prilosec to and increased dose of prevacid. eventually she was weened off the reglan and although there could possibly be side effects with reglan we did not experience any trouble. she seemed to "grow out of" the delayed gastric emptying eventually.

Katie, so sorry to hear that your son is having issues with this. My son Grant also had delayed gastric emptying.
He first was started on reglan(which worked well) but had to stop due to side effects. After that he was started on erythromycin. Unfortunately it had no effect and was also discontinued. I have heard that others have had good results with erythromycin. Hope you find something that works.
