Re. signs of an obstruction: everyone varies but in Emily's case it doesn't always start with pain. It starts with symptoms so vague it's hard to tell the difference between this or tummy bug. There is loose stool- which is what can get around the building obstruction, at first in decent quantity, but over a few days quantity becomes smaller and cramping sets in. Still nothing excruciating, but it gets uncomfortable. She continually feels like she HAS to go to the bathroom but is just not getting the relief she needs.
Then she starts eating less, belly becomes distended and very uncomfortable and sometimes on palpation you can feel a lump where the obstruction is. Pushing around where the lump is REALLY hurts. At this point she has no appetite and/or wants to eat but is 'full' after a few bites and/or vomits. She has a g-tube and has returned dark green or even brown stomach contents when she has an obstruction and when she vomits it's obvious she's slow in digesting what she is eating, there is dark bile... it's not 'normal' vomit. Sorry for the TMI but when we were new to this the more we knew the better!
Abdominal xray will show the obstruction, generally too high up for someone to get relief as you could with 'typical' constipation with something like a fleet enema. We tried massive doses of Miralax last time (i.e. 3 caps a day), then a cleanout with 8 caps in 32oz of Gatorade, milk of magnesia, mag citrate... none of it produced more than minimal results. We had to do GoLytely and it took 2.4 liters and 9hrs for her to finally stool!! The kid is only 50" tall ...I don't know where she put all that liquid for that amount of time. I thought she was going to freaking explode!!! Thank God she had the tube to administer it- I know we couldn't have gotten her to drink it.
Mamerth~ I am so glad you are finally feeling better!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
