My story is much different. As a child both of my parents were smokers. My mother smoked until I was about 17 and my Father smoked until he was about 70. Dad smoked about one cigarette each hour, mom slightly less. The smoking was done in the house, nobody went outdoors to smoke in those days. In the cold weather months the smell of smoke was always strong.

I don't know what all of this means except that perhaps unless you are directly effected by the smoke, it may not be that serious.

Just another opinion.

I know there have been recent studies regarding 3rd hand smoke. Smoke that lingers in people's hair, clothing, furniture, carpet.... I recently had a conference at a Casino, which I was dreading because I KNEW it was going to smell like stale smoke. Fortunately, I had a non-smoking room, but the hallways smelled like smoke -- I even rode up to my room in an elevator with an individual who was smoking. And even a can of beer that I drank on our tour bus smelled of stale smoke. Not sure how aluminum could smell that bad but --- ewww!

Smoking is a tough, tough addiction and I agree that maybe he has some stress going on in his life that's causing him to smoke again. Might be wise to discuss this with your cf team if possible. I'm sure he KNOWS it's bad him, but he can't help it.

All smokers in and around anyone with cystic fibrosis should be shown photos of cf lungs and photos of smoker lungs. It is unconscionable to live with a smoker. Data has stated that smoking shortens life and especially those of us challenged with already damaged lungs.

This probably won't help any because I know how extremely different each CF case is..but we were told that even if someone went outside to smoke that it would still be on their clothes, breath, and hair. They said if we can smell it at all, then there are particles in the air that are going into her airways and sticking. Unfortunately for us we have to pay very close attention to this due to her severe sinus and lung issues. I am a very timid person and I try very hard to always keep the peace, however when my baby is in soccer or t-ball and there is a smoker on the sidelines I have to find a very polite way to ask if they could move where it is not blowing in her direction, and I try to explain why, some people are super sweet about it, and others I have had to remove her from the game. I understand it is their right to do so, and try really hard not to get upset, but isn't it her right to, to get to live and be a child and not be afraid of breathing in something that is going to cause her to be poked or cut on. My brother in law smokes, and at first they were very upset with us for not coming over for my nephews b-day parties and such, but after 15 surgeries and numerous hospitalizations they understand now. It's so hard, because though it is their god given right to smoke, they are endangering my babies life.

Thanks for the replies and the article. In fact, in the past couple weeks he has attempted to quit again since I have been so upset about him starting up again. I'm crossing my fingers that this time he will be done for good. Rebecca

I really have NO TOLERANCE for smokers. Even if they are outside it still stinks. The unfortunate part is that it is an addiction like drugs.Plus they REALLY got to want to stop in order to get through the quitting process. They have to be committed 100% not for the sake of others like a spouse or child that has CF but for the sake of themselves they have to want to stop and if THEY want to then they will. I just hate the habit. Even when I am outside lets say eating lunch or dinner at a restaurant and the table next to me is smoking it is just so INTOLERABLE for a non smoker let alone someone with compromised lungs. Smokers just do not get how insidious it is to non smokers... Ugh, I can go on and on! Sorry I have no advice for you cause I truly do not know what I would do if my hubby smoked, it just would be unacceptable for me. Good luck hard thing to handle......
