I so incredibly agree with this whole topic. I live in Boston during the schoolyear, and it's a far cry from my small hometown. In Cheshire, cigarette smoke is somewhat easy to avoid, whereas in Boston, it's impossible. Especially on a college campus. Walking to class I end up inhaling dozens of different people's cigarettes. And I guarentee the little bit of smoke I get does me more damage than the whole cigarette does to the smoker who sucking down the whole thing. Rainy days are the worst, because people always stand RIGHT OUTSIDE the builings, and I have to walk through a fog to get to my classes. Many times I've seen people outside Yale, my hospital, smoking right outside the hospital doors. They've been standing within feet of a sign that says "no smoking in this area." Often if they're that close, I will read the sign very loudly as I walk by, and just keep going. It usually annoys them, and makes me laugh. There's really nothing we can do about it. If I see a smoker on my way to class that I know I'm going to pass, I try to hold my breath as I walk by, but that in and of itself is difficult. But I just want you to know I agree with this strongly. You're not alone. Hehe.

i know how you feel nicole. you could throw every single bit of fact you have at smokers and they still wont care how it affects you. my relatives still smoke around me even though they saw my brother waste away. the only thing you can do is enjoy the fact that you are a better human being than them. you can smoke pretty much everywhere here except for inside shops, inside restaurants [yep you can smoke in alfresco areas. hello smoke filled dinner] and inside medical places [you could smoke half a metre away from the hospital doors if you wish]. so no matter where i go i cant avoid it.

I live in Ontario and the area of Ontario where I live there is no smoking in any public place, it does help a lot. I am still exposed to smoke. My wife's parents are really bad there house stinks so bad I can't stand it. I walk through the front door and it's like someone punched me in the chest. We had to do a 5 hour drive to go to wedding and the wife told that they wouldn't smoke in the Van, they would wait until they got to the service stops to smoke. Yeah right. they smoked the way there and the way back.

Hi Dave, I can't believe your in laws would smoke in front of you, that's horrible. Sounds like they need a lesson in CF. Why didn't you speak up? I would have...... This one time I went out to dinner with a friend of mine and her mother. I was staying with them for the weekend. Her mother wanted to sit in the smoking section of the resturant....I said "no way, non-smoking section for me". Her mother was angry and refused, so I said "Well, I'll meet you at home" And I walked out. She followed me and agreed to sit in the non-smoking section. Because I stood up for myself that day she she now respects me and my health....
You deserve better! Good Luck with the in-laws.

In New York City, Mayor Bloomberg passed a law banning smoking in all restaurants/clubs/bars. I suppose I'd appreciate this if I frequented the NYC club scene, but I don't. Instead, if I happen to be in NYC on a Friday or Saturday night, the streets are clogged with people standing outside their "hangout" smoking away. It's so frustrating, because before, I didn't have to go into a restaurant or place that allowed smoking; it was so much easier to avoid smoke. Now, it's not as if I can avoid walking down the street. I'm sure if they did a study in NYC, the outdoor air quality plummeted after Bloomberg's dumb law was passed.

I don't know why you don't like the law. I'm waiting for the no smoking to law to come to New Jersey (where i live) and to Pennsylvania (where I go to school). I hate being in retaurants and bars that smell like smoke. I absolutely think the law is wonderful and am hoping that maybe it will discourage people from smoking. I really hate how smokers are inconsiderate and basically make the decision for us non-smokers that we are going to smoke. I hate breathing it in and I really think smoking overall should just be illegal.

I agree with the last poster, but the point that I think Coll was making (which I do agree with as well) is that when the law was made, it created a new problem. All the people that go outside of bars and restaurants to smoke, always smoke RIGHT OUTSIDE the door of wherever they are, and all along the street. I agree that it's nice to have smokers outside of the public places we might want to be, but I also agree that it has made walking down the street more difficult.

I'm in pennsylvania also ,and i CANT WAIT till they ban smoking in public places. I hate the fact that i cant go bowling or play pool, like i used to when i was without lung problems. In Fact there are a lot of parties i dont go to, even weddings, all because of smoke. No concerts, certain restaurants, friends houses, any place with smoke, is a place i wont go. I never understood the idea of smoking, never made an ounce of sense to me why anyone would deliberately harm a perfect body part. I always wanted to ask smokers... would you cut your arm, if it has no marks on it? would you poke yourself in the eye, if you have perfect vision? how about your foot, since you can walk well, would you consistently drop a brick on your foot till it breaks? Of coarse the answer would be no, and then i would want to ask.. then why would you inhale smoke in perfect lungs?
I know nicotine is addictive, but just knowing that makes me wonder why anyone would start in the first place. I think they should take cigarettes completely off the market and let these people that smoke, know what its like to have to do without, like us innocent people with lung diseases. Maybe they would have a little more respect for the people that dont want to ruin their lungs.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">

What I was saying was that the law, in idea, was a good plan (although even before it was passed, I never really had any trouble avoiding smoke indoors). However, when it was actually put into action, a whole new problem was created (as Emily said). I feel that seeing the way the streets are so full of smokers outside of restaurants/bars/clubs now, the law should be modified to ban smoking while just standing around outside these establishments too- not only because of the air pollution and irritating smoke, but it literally clogs up the street with people. I'm inviting anyone to come into NYC on a Friday night in a neighborhood with an active night life and take a deep breath and see what I mean. It's practically as bad as being indoors with a couple of smokers.
