Just because it's in a church doesn't mean they shouldn't be held up to reasonable standards. Do they reject children with other health needs? Are they certified for safety and first aid?

Hi Elizabeth,

It is so unfortunate you have to deal with this. I wonder if anyone at your CF clinic knows if this is even legal. All schools, even those in churches, have to deal with peanut allergies, celiac disease, diabetes, asthma, and cf. It would seem to me they would have a better plan and be more accommodating. It really bothers me they won't give him his enzymes. When my son was in preschool, it was in a church but not run by a church, they had no problem giving him his enzymes and they had to break it up and put it in the applesauce as he couldn't swallow pills. Teachers did this until second grade when a bill in Massachusetts was passed so he could legally do it on his own. I remember sometimes I used to feel bad asking people to do something extra for my child. I am not a person that usually asks for any sort of special treatment but I have learned that when it comes to my son I have to. I didn't mean that to sound like you can do anything about this situation, but more of I understand if you don't want to upset these teachers, or make waves so to speak. He is also 13 now so I have had to advocate a lot.

As far as snacks go I used to give my son pretzels, fruit snacks, those gummy bear kind and other non fat foods when he was in situation where enzymes couldn't easily be given. I think that is fine as long as getting extra calories isn't a big thing for him. Snack time can be a good time to get some extra calories in.

One last thing, what if you have a doctors note saying he needs these enzymes when he eats and you have a doctor signature that he can self administer? It just seems like it shouldn't be a big deal to give him the enzymes or have him do it himself. Don't all preschools, day care centers etc have to be licensed and have to have a designated person to administer CPR, epi pens etc? I would keep looking in to this. Maybe it won't help you this year but it might in the future.

Good luck and I wouldn't go back to give him the enzymes either. :) After all preschool should give the Mom some kind of break.

ok so ive been thinkin about this all last night and it was brought up too isnt there someone who is certified to do CPR in the school. good lord i hope so. and if so why cant that person give aidan his enzymes.there is a girl in aidans class who has celiac disease actually so mom only gives her "special" snacks too. i swear what is wrong with this director? its like they are afraid to give a child a pill. take him into your office and do it. shes sooo scared he will drop it and another chils will take it. and of course no one is certified to give it to him but back to my point what about being CPR certified would it fall under that. it is very frustrating for me. cause aidan is not a very good breakfast child. if im lucky i can get a cup of milk in him with polycose. or a milkshake. so from 830 to 12 hes getting nothing fat or high calorie.

It was a church that my daughter went to as well and her teacher just did it. Do they realize that the pills have no harm to a normal child if for some reason a child did get ahold of them? I would have your clinic write a letter or call the director and tell them the importance of him getting his med w/ snack and not being left out. I always worry about Ashlee getting 'left out' of something cuz of her CF and meds. Like today, they are going on a field trip (and she is in Kindergarten now, so the teacher is NOT allowed to give the med...only the office staff), but they were going to be having a snack. I figured it would be fruit or something since they were going to the Farmer's market, so I went to ask the teacher before school. Well, she had a note on the page that Ashlee was not allowed to eat anything with the other kids. They were just having apples, so I told the teacher she COULD have it! I don't want her left out and fruit is okay for her w/ out meds. Glad I okayed that w/ the teacher )

But, preschool...they had no problem w/ the teacher following my directions and giving her the enzymes and it was a ta church. I would have the clinic call...he may want what the others are having :/ Sad we have to deal with this crap! Good luck!

Elizabeth, I would check up on local early childhood licensing requirements. Usually it's state law and is enforced, reviewed by a local entity. County Social Services with the fire and health departments conducting inspections as well. In our state early childhood programs (daycares, preschools..) have to be licensed if they care for more than 4 children.

There are extensive requirements for all aspects of care for any program whether it's a homebased daycare for up to 7 children, a group daycare for 8-18, a center.... This includes CPR and 1st aid training, tb tests, sanitizing toys & surfaces, size of outdoor and indoor space, nutritional guidelines...

snacks for pre-school(update)

wow that is so sad about the note on the page about ashley not allowed to have snack with the kids. i am so glad u got to it so she wasnt left out. uggghhh could this all be any more frustrating for all of us.

ok heres the update....i talked with his cf team today finally cause i had them all running around since yesterday trying to figure out how to help me with this. and his nurse made a call to the county services and if you have a daycare or preschool that is open less then 4 hours a day then they dont have to have some ceretified to give meds there. you believe that crap right there? now she did give me the actual local more direct number for me to call like the city number and talk to some one there and let them know what is going on and maybe something can be done. because Aidan isnt the only one in that school that needs meds. i know for a fact of one other child in his class and i would be blown away if there werent more in the school.

plus his nurse brought up a great point what if a child has asthma and needs an inhaler what they wont give it to them actually they wont i swear the director tells you no and she looses money and business. what if Aidan is inflammed hes not sick doesnt have a bug or isnt on abx but just inflammed and needs extra xopenex during the day and i want to send it to school cause if their out on the playground running and he starts coughing and cant stop hes gonna needs it. ok now im offically pissed as im writting this. i really think this woman has no idea what disease my son has.

his nurse said she is making a call to them tommorow for me and will be sending them a letter also. i really hope i can get this to work out for me and other moms. did i do something wrong somewhere and not force it enough on the director of the school just how serious CF is?

I'd also check about ADA (american's with disabilities) guidelines. Also, if you haven't already, talk to the person at the county and see what they suggest. The less than 4 hours is BS. What about diabetes in addition to asthma. What about allergies and epi-pens? Allergic reaction to a bee sting or peanuts. Sorry, you have to wait til mom gets here! Yikes!

It is so frustrating when enzymes matter so much and are harmless to another child. This is the battles that just make you want to knock some heads.

Some of the things I give my son without enzymes are raisins, dried apricots, rice crackers and mini marshmallows. I believe he likes the marshmallows the best.
